Gov. Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania is steadfastly refusing to expand Medicaid in his state under the Affordable Care Act even though the federal government will pay for nearly all of it. And he claims that those who qualify for Medicaid without a co-pay — children, pregnant women, cancer patients — are mooches sucking up all the free healthcare.
“What I hear all the time coming out of the administration in Washington is that it’s the working poor [who benefit from Medicaid],” Corbett told WTAE, a local ABC affiliate, on Saturday. “Yes it is working, but you should be investing five, ten dollars in co-pay to understand that you go to to the hospital or the doctors, you just can’t keep going and going and going and think everything is going to be covered. You have to know that you have some interest in what’s going on.”
What world is he living in? Does he really think that children and pregnant women are just so excited to be going to the doctor for all those incredibly enjoyable medical procedures that they’re deliberately taking advantage of it because they don’t have a co-pay? This isn’t like offering free ice cream, for crying out loud. No one wants to go to the doctor. If they go, it’s because they need to.
