Gohmert to Challenge Cornyn in Primary?

The National Review Online is reporting that Tea Party groups in Texas are pushing for Rep. Louis Gohmert, who may well be the single dumbest man in Congress, to mount a primary challenge against Sen. John Cornyn for his seat in the Senate in 2014.

Louie Gohmert for Senate? That’s what a number of Texas tea-party activists are hoping for. They’re not happy with Senator John Cornyn, and Katrina Pierson, who serves on the Texas Tea Party Caucus Advisory Board, tells me she’s heard from a number of activists pushing for the outspoken East Texas congressman to challenge the senator…

Pierson and Fleming both told me that the grassroots activists they’re hearing from have numerous concerns with Cornyn’s record, but they’re especially frustrated that he withdrew support for Senator Mike Lee’s efforts to defund the Affordable Care Act in this fall’s continuing resolution. Fleming says that Cornyn’s opposition to Lee’s efforts will lose him votes in a potential primary…

Gohmert’s office didn’t respond to a request for comment on whether or not he’s mulling a potential senatorial bid.

Bear in mind that Cornyn is one of the most conservative people in Congress. The National Journal rated him the 14th most conservative senator. He has a 100% rating from the anti-abortion groups, a 99% score from the National Taxpayers Union and a 100% rating from Americans for Tax Reform, a 90% lifetime rating from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a 93% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union. But not right wing enough for the Tea Party crowd.

And frankly, we don’t usually let people like Gohmert into the Senate. He really is just plain stupid and people like that usually top out at the House level. That’s as high as they can go. But then again, this is Texas we’re talking about.

Whoda thunk it, Ed Brayton is turning optimist.

But how much worse could he be? WAIT! Don’t answer that.

  • Pierce R. Butler

If Bachmann doesn’t run for re-election, and Gohmert runs for Senate, and Steve King runs for President – in 2015, the average intelligence of House members will skyrocket!

This will be a bloodbath primary. Cornyn is mostly a big business type with a lot of appeal to urban republicans. Gohmert is just a yokel. Five years ago I would have said a guy like Gohmert would never stand a chance. These days, anything can happen.

Since we have semi-open primaries, I may just have to vote Republican if this happens.

  • iplon

Perhaps we will be lucky enough to see another big battle for each of them to be the most conservative, followed by an election where the majority of the non-extremists are so tired then stay home or vote left.

I don’t think Cornyn has too much to worry about. He’ll just have to defund ACORN a couple of times more, and perhaps filibuster some resolution honoring cancer survivors – and he’ll be back in good graces with the crazies.

It’s getting so that Attila the Hun would have a hard time winning a Republican primary.

I think Cornyn is worried, especially after seeing what happened after Ted “calgary” cruz beat out dewhurst in the republican party. I thinkr “carzy” louie could beat cornyn in the primary (remember this is texas and we have lots of crazy people).

  • wildbill

In the words of our guv, “OOPS.” I meant to say:

I think “crazy” louie could beat cornyn in the primary (remember this is texas and we have lots of crazy people).

  • Trebuchet

Since Ed has forsworn calling people “crazy”, I kind of like “carzy”. Perhaps we can make it a new FTB meme.

Gohmert wants to challenge Rand Paul for Dumbest Sitting Senator.

  • Michael Heath

Let’s not forget what caused Sen. Cornyn to first become a fixture on national news during the W. Bush era. That was rhetoric that a reasonable person could perceive as an attempt to incite violence against ‘activist’ federal judges.

I point that out since it’s my observation there are no reasonable Republicans with even a scintilla of integrity left at the national level.

    Re hunter @ #12

I am afraid that Paul is not as dumb as James Inhofe. Inhofe is certainly a good candidate to challenge Gohmert, Steve King, Michele Bachmann, etc. as the dumbest member of either house.

    James Inhofe?

Exactly. That is just what I was thinking. And I’m from OK.

As a congressman, Inhofe was often referred to as the dumbest person in Congress.

So, Cornyn is forced to spend a lot more during the primary. If he wins, he’s out a lot of money he could’ve used in the general election. If he loses and Gohmert wins the general, we get the exact same voting behavior. If he loses and Gohmert loses the general, we probably get someone more centrist than either.

I’m not seeing much of a downside here. With the possibility of our international reputation, but we’ve been hitting “flush” on that for a while.

Never underestimate the power of stupidity in the state of Texas, where the possession of more than five dildos is a crime–Molly Ivins explains in this video

You know what would be fun? If these guys the Tea Party want in ran as independents more often (if they already do). My understanding is the US doesn’t have a preferential voting system (someone please correct me if I’m wrong) and with the conservative vote split . . . .

    Just saying.

  • birgerjohansson

    “with the conservative vote split . . . . ”

If you are living in Texas, you should

1 Encourage Gohmert, to challenge Cornyn for the senate in the primaries.

    2. If Gohmert lloses in the primary, encourage him (or some other tea party person) to run as an independent.

In both cases, you should help spread rumors that Cornyn has a child out of wedlock with a black woman (It worked for Dubya) or that he gets campaign money from Jewish bankers. Push polls, anyone?

  • birgerjohansson

    Re. 19;

(Please tell me the Tea party voters are too sophisticated for this to work. This is one of the cases where I want to be mistaken)
