TN Church Kicks Out Family With Gay Daughter

A church in Tennessee has taken its bigotry and intolerance to a whole new level. After a woman in that town won her battle for same-sex partner benefits, the church is kicking out her parents and even her extended family if they don’t repent of their “sin” of supporting her.

Leaders at Ridgedale Church of Christ met in private with Kat Cooper’s mother, aunt and uncle on Sunday after the regular worship service. They were given an ultimatum: They could repent for their sins and ask forgiveness in front of the congregation. Or leave the church.

Their sins?

“My mother was up here and she sat beside me. That’s it,” said Kat Cooper. “Literally, they’re exiling members for unconditionally loving their children — and even extended family members.”

But the family’s support of Kat Cooper was as good as an endorsement of homosexuality, said Ken Willis, minister at Ridgedale Church of Christ.

“The sin would be endorsing that lifestyle,” Willis said. “The Bible speaks very plainly about that.”

One can only hope that it will convince the family that the church they have so long belonged to is full of assholes and that their religious views condone such assholeishness.

Remember, kids, that’s what “family values” means: you cut out and exile the part of the family that don’t support the religious right’s political agenda.

At least the good news in this story is that the town did the right thing (eventually), the parents stood by their daughter and her wife (ok, the bad news is the other set of parents did not), and the church stands out as being immoral shitbags. Keep it up, church, you are making it easier for everyone.

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26)

    Speaking of family values.

The mugs in the pews are probably delighted. At last they have to OK to pour scorn and ridicule upon people of their own class and to be praised for doing so. No matter the harshness of the treatment; that just proves the rightness of their cause. And the fact they can turn so easily against their one-time friends proves the strength of their faith. As Jesus once said: “Those who are not with me are against me.” (Matthew 12:30)

And then there’s “Horseplay gone wrong.” From the article “A Tennessee church has decided that its pastor’s son can no longer work with children after he was accused of sexually assaulting and battering at least one boy at church camp.” It appears to be a different church.

I’ll stick with Christopher Reeve’s definition of family values:

“The last few years we’ve heard a lot about something called family values. And like many of you I’ve struggled to figure out what that means. And since my accident I found a definition that seems to make sense. I think it means that we’re all family. And that we all have value.”

What ever happened to judge not lest thee be judged?

  • No, Ed, that’s not a new level at all for that lot.

What ever happened to judge not lest thee be judged?

Not a problem. There’s something in there to support any position you care to take. As the Sages taught, “for all things are in it.” (Avot 5:22)

So, despise and disconnect from anyone whose beliefs are different from yours. Gee, that sounds just like Scientology. The Pastor wants to put those people into the condition of non-existance. Maybe they need to sign up for the SeaOrg.

  • I don’t feel sorry for the parents.

They collected the benefits of this bigotry when it suited their purpose. For how long? Years, decades?

For how long they hated others who were not exactly like themselves. For how long they judged others from their moral high ground. Piously. Fervently. Dickishly. Their church sounds quite pious, fervent and dickish (not that most other churches don’t).

Oh, how much they must have enjoyed the feeling of superiority to the filthy people of different faith or no faith, or those who do not love and live as they do.

Their ugly silly deathcult comes and bites their own ass. They complain. They cry. They have talks. They want sympathy. They get coverage. Ticket to heaven.

I’m tired of bigots. No sorry feelings for them. Never ever. For nobody like them.

People get their kicks from funny things, like leather boots, god, nascar. Few from what is right. Not these people.

They got two thousand years to get their shit straight.

Perhaps it’s me. Perhaps I’m the dick here. For having this hate and anger in me. And daring to tell others how I feel. Anyway, this story is old forgotten news tomorrow because there will be another story, starring the same people, reading the same storybook, worshipping the same superhero.

I wish I didn’t have to be a dick. Maybe someday I’ll stop being a dick. It would be because I’d be numb of this shit and simply stopped caring for the victims. The innocent bystanders. Wait, but then I’d be a dick for sure. I won’t ask strength to not be a dick, or forgiveness for being one from anyone but the rest of the humanity.

This could be the best thing that every happened to that family.

This must be a very impressive church. Not only are they pointing out Jesus’s flaws for hanging out with sinners like prostitutes, outcasts and tax collectors, but by throwing the first stones, they are declaring themselves to be without sin. Very ballsy. This should make the management upstairs take notice.

  • gshelley

No doubt the police will be along to arrest them all any time now.

“The sin would be endorsing that lifestyle,” Willis said. “The Bible speaks very plainly about that.”

I think his bible is broken. The verses he refers to:

    1. Command death, not excommunication of the family

    2. Do not speak at all about female sexuality. They “very plainly” talk about a “man lying with a man” and so forth.

  • Good. Getting out of superstition any way is a good thing.

Whatever sane people may think of this, the church has an absolute legal right to behave this way, and would have the same right in any state that legally recognized same-sex relationships. That is what religious freedom protects; religious freedom does not protect them from getting their panties into a twist because other people are allowed to live and prosper without following the rules of their cult.

  • macallan

The more people leave that kind of assclown churches the better. Got to start somewhere.

  • Whatever sane people may think of this, the church has an absolute legal right to behave this way

As if anyone said ” the church has no legal right to behave this way”

  • Gvlgeologist, FCD

Whatever sane people may think of this, the church has an absolute legal right to behave this way

And everyone else has an absolute legal right to comment on what assholes they are. What’s your point?

  • @11:

Being a dick is not what you’re doing.

For examples of commenters “being a dick” please read anything by Don Williams.

You’re right; fuck those KKKristianist ReiKKKwing asswipes–all of ’em.

  • cjcolucci

My point, probably obscure because nobody had yet said anything stupid about religious freedom, is that religious people say stupid shit about religious freedom and how god-fearin’ folks are losing theirs. This is a data point that they aren’t. That the rest of the world is, in this cult’s view, going to Hell in a handbasket, is not a violation of its religious freeedom.

    Maybe I should have waited.
