More Abuse for Jessica Ahlquist

With the announcement the Class of 1963 at Cranston West High School has donated two new banners to be put up in place of the prayer mural taken down after Jessica Ahlquist’s successful lawsuit, there’s a new torrent of hateful abuse being aimed at Jessica on Twitter. When she playfully tweeted that she hadn’t been invited to the unveiling ceremony for the banners, the insults and attacks were unleashed, along with some serious ignorance too.

Hey, at least there were no death threats this time, unlike when she first won the case.

Though Alzina Kress is clearly a heretic among Christians; canonically, Titus 2:11 clearly indicates that the invitation is universal.

It seems sad how unfamiliar some “Christians” are with their own scripture.

  • caseloweraz

“Jesterfaze” tweeted: “It’s so sad that the selfishness of atheists has led to a persecution like political atmosphere for Christians.”

Yes, it’s such a hardship for folks like you to be prohibited from posting comments like that and the one before it, and cracked down upon when you disobey. Have you had that knock on the door yet?

    No? Didn’t think so.

Are we feeling a little cranky, Sybil?

    Just another welfare junky.

Because attending university somehow makes you a welfare junky.

The projection is strong in this one.

I’m sure that the blogs resident physicist and math department chairman will trot his his no true Scotsman shtick.

  • RichardReed84 is an atheist who was presumably trying to be funny … He often fails at this however so not particularly surprising it fell flat here as well.

Wow. Such magnificence of language compels me to join their club. Nothing like spreading eternal love via spitting endless hate.

There are countless proofs that xianity is just made up mythology.

    One of the strongest is…xians.

They are no better than anyone else and frequently far worse than anyone else. We’ve all seen huge numbers of people whose minds have been warped by toxic religions. Most recently in the OP to this thread.

Some xians never, ever miss a chance to demonstrate the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of their religion. Who would jesus insult, maim, torture, rape, mutilate, and kill?

  • smhll

I find the “wanted attention” meme especially annoying.

  • StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!

Hey, at least there were no death threats this time, unlike when she first won the case.

True that. Gotta look on the bright side.

(Plus, I hate to say it but add a big “yet / that we know of” there as well.)

  • lofgren

Remember guys, there is no more controversy. The community has healed and is ready to move on.

  • StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!

@ ^ lofgren : Well clearly not all of the community, alas.

(Wonder what the percentages – don’t care / think Jessica Ahlquist was right / wrong respectively – are here?)

  • StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!

Yeesh, Christians (especially these Christians) sure are sore losers ain’t they?

Anyone would think they think this was the worst thing possible and thus they really don’t have much to complain about really hey?

  • Chiroptera

Texas Pride @TXPride80: …that prayer did nothing to harm her.

And taking it down did nothing to harm the Christians, either. But from which side are all the harrassment and vile threats coming from?

Sorry to derail this discussion a bit, but this is one of my hobby horses — has anything good come out of Twitter? Ever?

Every time it’s brought up here, it’s in a way that makes Youtube comments sound like bastions of civility and decorum. I honestly and for the life of me can’t figure out why anyone would voluntarily subject themselves to this stuff. I heard a description of Twitter as “21st century graffitti,” and that sounds about right. So why are people spending so much time reading the bathroom walls?

  • Michael Heath

Consider the level of evil needed to celebrate belief in a god who will condemn Ms. Ahlquist to eternal suffering.

Consider the delusional idiocy required by all these Christian tweeters as they defectively conflate the promotion of secularism with one’s religious beliefs.

  • caseloweraz

BruceGee1962L “…has anything good come out of Twitter? Ever?”

Well, it has exposed the cluelessness of some prominent people, such as Donald Trump.

  • lofgren

Yep, StevoR, that’s pretty much how sarcasm works.

  • Sorry to derail this discussion a bit, but this is one of my hobby horses — has anything good come out of Twitter? Ever?

That’s like asking whether anything good has come out of blogging. You need a new hobby horse– Twitter is a medium, not a message.

  • brucegee1962 pretty much echoes my feelings: all Twitter does is combine all the worst features of every other telecom medium, with none of the advantages. It’s like email or instant-messaging or a chat-room, but with no ability to control who sees or responds to your messages; it’s like a blog, but you can’t post a message of more than 144 or so characters; it’s like face-to-face conversation in a large public gathering, but without the face-to-face bit; and you can be as measured and deliberate about your posts as you want — but you can’t expect any of your readers to return the favor; and it’s like a toxic-waste containment facility, but without the containment. So all Twitter really does is attract the lowest of the low, merely because it’s the one place where they can get in everyone else’s faces and no one can silence or control them.

  • That’s like asking whether anything good has come out of blogging…

The big difference is, we can actually see something good coming out of blogging.

  • So all Twitter really does is attract the lowest of the low

Like Phil Plait, Wil Wheaton, John Scalzi, PZ Myers, Rebecca Watson, Adam Savage, Daniel Dennett, to name a few people I follow who tweet regularly….yeah, total scumbags, those people.

Along with Jessica Ahlquist herself, of course. Truly the lowest of the low.

  • The big difference is, we can actually see something good coming out of blogging.

Because you follow the blogs of people who write good things, rather than shitty things.

    Really, it’s not that hard.

  • brucegee1962

Graffitti is also a medium. But you don’t usually see grown-ups taking it seriously.

All else depends on the person giving opinions and the detailed discussions therein. To dismiss Twitter as a medium is to dismiss opinions in general.

Most of the internet is unsupported opinion anyway.

I can think of one good use for Twitter and it’s the only reason I have an account. My local transit system has a Twitter feed. I can get immediate information on service outages from it.

  • RichardReed84 is such a friggin’ troll. It disappoints me that he’s a member of my favorite fandom, too, since avoiding that kind of behavior is supposed to be one of the rallying points of the community.

  • @ michaelbrew 37

I’m not surprised. I have been a part of the Brony random for more than two years now and the entire time I was involved in the discussion board of the imageboard Ponychan (I moderate it now). There are misogynistic Bronies, there are racist Bronies, and other kinds of prejudice and bigotry based on characteristics. There are Bronies that will rabidly emote about how all socialists and communists are murders because of their personal politics (and they tend to co-locate with Randian/Libertarian Bronies). I’ve seen many other examples over the last two years.

But there are also lots of decent Bronies worth working with to uphold some of the underlying values that you can find in the ways that Ms. Faust designed her characters, their challenges, and their world. We have a charity board now, I see signs of discussion about how to be decent people instead of bleating catchphrases mindlessly. It’s a silly thing but I’ll not look a gift-horse in the mouth if it can end up helping people figure out how to be better people in the long run (myself included).
