Gambian President Spews Bigotry at UN

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, a virulently and violently anti-gay bigot who once told gay people to leave his country or they would be beheaded, addressed the United Nations General Assembly last week and delivered a bizarre and hateful anti-gay screed.

“Those who promote homosexuality want to put an end to human existence,” Gambian President Yahya Jammeh told the gathering of world leaders in New York. “It is becoming an epidemic and we Muslims and Africans will fight to end this behavior.”

“Homosexuality in all its forms and manifestations which, though very evil, antihuman as well as anti-Allah, is being promoted as a human right by some powers,” said Jammeh, who is accused by activists of human rights abuses during his rule.

At the same time, a smaller part of the assembly, known as the LGBT Core Group, put out a statement calling on all the nations of the world to repeal laws criminalizing homosexuality and to protect LGBT people against discrimination. I’m sure we’ll be hearing soon from Scott Lively about what a hero Jammeh is.

Does anybody get the right of reply or do the bigots get a free pass in the UN?

The guy would be right at home in the tea bag party, except for the colour of his skin. He is removing his country from the Commonwealth because it has colonial overtones. This after more than 40 years as a member state. Apparently, the Commonwealth doesn’t approve of some violations of basic human rights.

The Tea Bags will applaud him as long as he doesn’t move into their neighborhood.

Maybe Ghana will get rid of him if they can be convinced that he is a secret Russian Orthodox Christian?

    Okay, Gambia.

Have I missed something? Does Pres. Jammeh thinks someone is going to declare homosexuality compulsory?

@6 No, he thinks being gay is a choice, and one that we are all eagerly waiting to make as soon as the UN says it is OK.

They sound like my mother trying to understand technology. “Where do I go for the Google?” “Where is the Gambia?”

    oranje @8:

I may have grown up in United States, but I’m pretty sure that the standard English-language name for the country is “The Gambia,” not just “Gambia”. It’s named for the Gambia River.
