Walker Supports ENDA?

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is clearly considering making a run for the White House in 2016 but he may find himself in trouble with the religious right base over his apparent support for laws that forbid discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, including one in his state:

WALKER: In Wisconsin, we’ve had anti-discriminatory laws that are very similar to [ENDA] for more than 30 years and they work quite effectively. We’re also a state that has a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as one man and one woman…

HUNT: So, similar to the Wisconsin bill, the House bill should be something that…

WALKER: Yeah, I mean, we’ve not had problems. We’ve had no problems — I should say, limited problems — with that.

Wisconsin was the first state in the country to prohibit discrimination against gay people in housing and employment and Walker admits that this hasn’t caused any problems. So much for the standard conservative argument that the Employment Non-Discrimination Act will destroy religious liberty. But then he adds this:

At the same time, we still have a constitutional amendment that defines marriage. There’s a healthy balance there.

Uh, yeah. It’s a “healthy balance” if we prevent discrimination in one instance and mandate it in another. You know, just like it was a “healthy balance” to have laws against lynching black people while denying them the right to vote. It’s all about balance.

    “healthy balance”

I think South Park has already made an episode about that.

Healthy balance in this case means pissing off people on both sides of the argument.

It is about balance. Civil Rights are zero sum gain. In Wisconsin The Gays can rent houses but they can’t get married and Traditional Americans™ can get married but they can’t rent houses. Traditional Americans™ can still get mortgages, though. And also rent apartments. But The Gays can’t. So, again, balance.

I weep for the Republican party. Here they are, with a number of candidates, like Walker and Christie, who can appeal to “Blue State” voters but who probably can’t succeed in the primaries dominated by the tea baggers.

    … NOT!
