God’s Not Dead and Your Right Wing Uncle

Happy Nice Time People, which I think is a spinoff from Wonkette, has a post about the eagerly anticipated (at least by me) movie God’s Not Dead. They rightly point out how similar the premise of the movie is to a whole bunch of emails that are forwarded by your right wing uncle. They offer this as a perfect example of the genre:

"Never saw that one. Thanks for planning my next movie night."

If by “example” you mean “spoof”.

@1: Are you sure? Poe’s law and all that!

I wish these things weren’t already beyond parody.

God, like Punk, aren’t dead – but they sure smell that way.

If by “spoof,” you mean “every one of those details can be found in wingnut e-mailers, if not all together.”

Movies like this aren’t meant to make converts or change minds; they’re meant to reassure the True Believers they’re so very persecuted. Interesting to note the highest priority in Christian media these days isn’t outreach or evangelism, but reinforcing the siege mentality.

Did the end line, “that Navy Seal was Albert Einstein” get cut off?

Still waiting for the actual wingnut email that has a character with 1500 tours of duty.

The xians know their religion is dying in the USA.

Choking on their hate, lies, hypocrisy and irrelevance.

Hate sellls and sells well. It’s a main theme in the bible. Hate the Egyptians, Canaanites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Apostates, Heretics, and at the end, hate the Jews. But it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

And all they can think of to do is more of what isn’t working. We should send them a thank you card every year. It’s a great tailwind.

I am rather amused. It’s always some sort of Navy Seal or someone else who is a “certified badass”. You never hear about “Christian Salaryman doing this”.

Because killing dudes in hard ways is more important to society than “getting a damn education”.

It’s a feature length Chick Tract.

Obvious Poe, for Chrissakes. No wingnut from that particular strain is literate or clever enough to use the adverb “Jewishly,” and while this includes are a number of grammatical and spelling errors, there aren’t nearly enough to place this it any existing sphere of wingnut operations.

    Too spot on.

Except for the last two paragraphs, the “example” is an exceedingly accurate representation of what entertains my right-wing father. The coda is a bit spoofy and over the top — except that I have certainly seen its various brain-twisted components scattered throughout the wingnutterverse.

    Is “wingnutterverse” a word?

I read the header and thought:

“Shouldn’t that be, “God’s Not Dead and Bob’s Your Right Wing Uncle, know what I mean? Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.”

To be fair, the character is in college, “getting an education”. Of course for the Fundie Christian this means earning a degree so that agreeing with Fundie doctrine gives them authority by proxy. (“See? Even PhDs agree with us!”)

He’s a Navy Seal or some such to help reassure the poor oppressed Christians that they are manly, and liberal scientist professors never are.

Too many RWNJ have military experience. He would not have 1500 tours of duty – that’s silly – but something more reasonable – like eight.

The Dunning Kruger is strong in the folks who write these anecdotes. The idea that evolutionary science thinks that individual entities evolve (starting with rocks!) or has a goal (why wouldn’t the rock have “evolved” into a lobster?) and that the scientist would never have thought of X (whatever ignorant misunderstanding X might be) is …I want to say pathological. Can 30% or so of our population be psychologically pathological?
