As I’ve said, I’m not a fan of the mass wedding at the Grammys (or of the Grammys, for that matter), but I’m really enjoying watching the anti-gay bigots lose their freaking minds over it. Selena Owens of Conservative Campaign Committee PAC (I’m guessing those are pronounced as hard ‘C’s) says it was an assault on conservatives who had to — gasp! — see gay people being happy.
The Grammy Awards is proof positive that the culture war has unabashedly come front and center against conservatives – let alone Christians.
You haven’t really been paying attention, have you? Conservative Christians have always been on one side (the wrong side) of culture war issues. And artists and musicians are almost always on the other side of those issues. Been that way for decades, maybe centuries.
I don’t watch the Grammys, but in light of all the frenzy via social media over the gay-marriage ceremony that aired live during the show, I decided to watch this segment on YouTube to understand exactly what went down.
What I witnessed was a forthright assault on conservatives.
Oh yes, of course. Just like putting an interracial couple on The Jeffersons was an “assault on conservatives” in the 70s. And having Kirk and Uhura kiss on Star Trek was an “assault on conservatives” in 1968, less than a year after the Supreme Court disappointed the right wing by upholding a right to interracial marriage in a fight virtually identical to the one going on over same-sex marriage today. Whenever conservatives see something they don’t like, they’re being “assaulted.”
What caught my attention were the lyrics to the all inclusive, equality anthem “Same Love,” performed by rapper Macklemore – specifically these:
The right-wing conservatives think [being gay's] a decision
And you can be cured with treatment and religion
Man-made rewiring of a predisposition
Playing God, aw nah, here we go
America the brave still fears what we don’t know.
Bam. There it is. “… right-wing conservatives …”
A few stanzas from the onset of the song, Macklemore attacks, and conservatives are called out in the culture war against homosexuals.
Wait, you mean to tell me that someone who disagrees with you actually criticized you in a song? Why, that’s assault! How dare they express their viewpoint when you don’t like it! Oh, the humanity!
The culture war has escalated to the point of conservatives directly taking the hit for the anti-gay agenda. Typically, Christians bear the brunt of that charge. But as these lyrics prove, the homosexual agenda is striking more specifically at the heart of politics than religion alone, further increasing heightened tension between conservatives and liberals. Macklemore directly places blame at the threshold of conservatives in the most artistic format known to man: music.
And…therefore…what? He places the blame on you because you deserve the blame. Assault! Help, help, we’re being repressed! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Seriously, these people couldn’t be any more ridiculous if they tried.
