Meet the Wingnut Candidate: Bob Marshall

Virginia has an open seat in Congress because Rep. Frank Wolf is retiring and the theocrats and wingnuts are lining up to take their shot. One of them is Bob Marshall, a Republican delegate in the Virginia Assembly. Right Wing Watch has a rundown of some of Marshall’s most inane and extremist statements over the years.

1. Disabled Children Are God’s Punishment For Abortion

At a 2010 press conference attacking Planned Parenthood, Marshall said that “the number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically” because “when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children.” He called disabled children a “special punishment” from God on women who have had abortions…

4. Health Care Reform Is Like Rape

In an attempt to undermine the Affordable Care Act, Marshall demanded that Virginia exempt itself from the individual health insurance mandate, warning that health care reform represented “criminal activity” akin to the work of “mobsters.”

“This is a fight over whether you are a citizen or you are a serf,” he said. “It’s not your wallet that they want, it’s your soul, it’s your family.” But Marshall didn’t stop there: “Indeed, the individual mandate is not voluntary commercial intercourse; it is forcible economic rape.”

Marshall has also said that health care reform would “euthanize seniors” and “kill capitalism.”

In today’s GOP, sounds like a real contender.

So…. in order to punish evil women who dared to have abortions, God screws up the bodies of innocent children to condemn them to lives of pain, high medical costs and the inability to live normally. Wonderful. Gotta love it.

    Seems pretty mainstream to me.

He’s going to have to up his game to get anywhere in today’s PoG (Party of God.)

It’s not surprising to me that there are asshole conservatives who are so greedy they try to spin “getting healthcare to poor people” into something heinous.

It’s shocking to me that there are people out there that buy that horseshit.

Are they all just greedy fuckwits that secretly think there’s not enough to go around? Is there just a giant group of people that hate the poors so much they will stop at nothing to grind them into dust? Are the just gullible retards?

    I like this one:

    5. Creating A New Currency

Marshall, fearing an economic collapse, called on Virginia to consider creating its own currency due to the likelihood of “a major breakdown of the Federal Reserve System. He said that economic doom may be one result of the 2009 stimulus package, which he said is “as much a chain as ankle bracelets were as to African-Americans in the 1860s in this state…it is a chain of death that we’re not going to escape.”

Want to bet he has no embarrassment over being so wrong?

Marshall said that “the number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically” because “when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children.”

This looks like another lie from the forced birthers and female slavers.

    dailykos.com

Does he cite any scientific evidence? No, he just asserts it and then goes on to give a cause as punishment from the Christian god.

I’m trying to track down the real data without much success so far. All I get is dozens of forced birther sites repeating the same old lies.

  • raven

The female slavers lie constantly and repeat their lies ad infinitum. A few of the common ones.

    1. Abortion causes breast cancer. It doesn’t.

    2. Abortion makes you go crazy. It doesn’t. Rates of mental problems are higher among women who actually give birth. This is due to the fact that an abortion is over and done with while a baby hangs around for a few decades and taking care of children is an effort.

    3. Abortion effects future fertility. It doesn’t.

    4. They have many more and make up more all the time. I like the ones about adults who remember surviving their own abortion attemps and confronting the doc a few decades later.

  • raven

I can’t find any studies that indicate that abortion causes an increased risk of handicapped children in subsequent live births.

Most likely this is just another lie from the female slavers. It’s not like they ever tell the truth.

“ankle-bracelets”? An ankle-bracelet is what we wore when I was 15 (back in the late 1950s); they were all the rage among teenage girls back then. What the slaves wore were shackles, chaining them together in the infamous coffles as they were transported into the deep South. The words we use matter a great deal: an ankle “bracelet” merely sounds cute.(Or at least we thought so back then.)

Socioeconomic inequalities in outcome of pregnancy and neonatal mortality associated with congenital anomalies: population based study.

Smith LK, Budd JL, Field DJ, Draper ES.

    deleted for length

Compared with the least deprived areas, the most deprived areas had a 61% higher rate of live births (1.61, 1.21 to 2.15) and a 98% higher neonatal mortality rate (1.98, 1.20 to 3.27) associated with a congenital anomaly.

This is a British survey but has some relevance.

The rate of handicapped children is double in poor as compared to well off areas. This is thought to be due to better prenatal screening and use of abortion.

I suspect if you look at poor fundie areas in the USA, you would see the same pattern i.e higher rates of handicapped children.

    My question for Mr. Marshall:

So, your god punishes women who have had abortions by dooming their subsequent children, who did not even exist when their mothers made that decision, to a life of pain, handicap and struggle. Do you agree with this policy? Do you think it is fair and just? Is this how you would behave as a legislator on the national stage? If so, why? If not, why is any god who would do this worthy of your worship or anyone else’s? Also, please cite you source for this statistic, and please explain disabled children born to women who have never had an abortion.

I’m not a proctologist, but I know an asshole when I see one.

GOP means God’s Own Party doesn’t it?

Depends on whether you read it from left to right or right to left. The Semitic right-to-left of “Party of God” would mirror into GoP for us left-to-right types. Of course, the words would change too, so you get “Hezbollah” instead. It’s all pretty much the same, though.

    *sigh*

Another person I’d like to smack with my chair.

I hate that there’s this stupid trope about disabilities being a punishment from god. It’s just… okay, I’m disabled. According to these toolboxes, I am simultaneously: a) being punished by god (for what? existing?); b) a punishment from god; and c) some kind of “inspiration” because “God put me here for a reason”.

    So. Sick. Of. It.

@7. tsig : “GOP means God’s Own Party doesn’t it?”

From what I gather which may be mistaken (non American typing) its actually supposed to mean Grand Old Party.

(The “Old” is seemingly a lot more apt than the “Grand” these days.)

But I’m sure most of them would be comfortable with that reading as well.
