Look, Another Group of Bigots

Two of the most deranged bigots in the Christian right, Scott Lively and Peter LaBarbera, apparently looked around the country and thought to themselves, “You know what this nation really needs? Another anti-gay “family values” group to promote their bigotry.”

A press conference will be held to announce the formation of a new organization, the Coalition for Family Values, whose purpose is to unify and coordinate pro-family groups around the United States and the world to more effectively oppose the now-global LGBT agenda…

The coalition is being organized by Dr. Scott Lively of Defend the Family International, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, and Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), based outside Chicago, Illinois — with the assistance of other existing pro-family groups and leaders in the United States and abroad.

The first action of the coalition will be to issue a statement of support for the Russian pro-family laws of 2013 and 2014 — e.g., the prohibition of pro-homosexual propaganda to minors — and to urge other nations of the world to follow the Russian example.

Oh good, because that be a refreshing change of pace. Because the Family Research Council, the Family Research Institute, Focus on the Family, the American Family Association, the Alliance Defending Freedom, Liberty Counsel, American Center for Law and Justice, Traditional Values Coalition, Americans for Traditional Values, the American Decency Association and a bunch of other such groups just isn’t enough.

well, you know why there has to be another group of bigots, right? It’s because those *other* bigots aren’t doing it “right”, though they’ll work with them grudgingly. It’s why we have so many types of TrueChristians, all who are sure that those “others” don’t know the “real” truth.

  • Randomfactor

It is morally wrong to allow the suckers to keep their money. Another group with “Family” in its name is clearly needed.

In fact, a group calling itself the Family Research Family will likely be set up soon…

  • dingojack

Peter LaBarbera wasn’t going to be included in the group originally, but Livery changed his mind and invited him in- as an AFTAH thought!

OK, OK. I’ll just get my coat and leave….

Be nice to them, Ed. These organizations are leading the fight for LGBT rights.

No, seriously. Come back in twenty years and everyone will know that.

Great job security, forming yet another group to coordinate all the existing RWNJ groups.

…whose purpose is to unify and coordinate pro-family groups around the United States and the world….

In other words, they recognize that US groups are going to be collecting a whole lot less money. So they need to better coordinate so they don’t waste their ever decreasing number of dollars with duplicating effort. Also, some groups are just going to have to disband as fewer people are interested in volunteering.

On March 14, 2012, Lively was sued in U.S. Federal Court by gay rights group Sexual Minorities Uganda under the Alien Tort Statute, who accused Lively of inciting the persecution of gay men and lesbians. Lively responded “[t]hat’s about as ridiculous as it gets. I’ve never done anything in Uganda except preach the Gospel and speak my opinion about the homosexual issue”.[25]

Pam Spees, a staff attorney for the organization representing Sexual Minorities Uganda in the case against Lively, the Center for Constitutional Rights, said, “This is not just based on his speech. It’s based on his conduct. Belief is one thing, but actively trying to harm and deprive other people of their rights is the definition of persecution”.[25][26][27]

In August 2013, a federal judge rejected an attempt by the defense to dismiss the case against Lively. U.S. District Court Judge Michael A. Ponsor rejected the jurisdictional claims by the defendant, ruling that the plaintiffs were on solid ground under international and federal law and that First Amendment arguments were “premature”.[28]

FWIW, Scott Lively is being sued in federal court for crimes against humanity. So for the US judge is letting the case go on. I doubt he will be convicted but it’s amazing it got this far.

    wikipedia SL:

    Lawsuit[edit]

In 1991, Lively assaulted Catherine Stauffer, throwing her against a wall and dragging her across the floor of a Portland church, at an Oregon Citizens Alliance (OCA) event she had been trying to film.[16] Stauffer received a judgement of over $31,000 against Lively and the OCA in 1992.[17][18]

    Another one from wikipedia.

Scott Lively can be violent. No surprise. Wherever you find hate, you find hate crimes.

    @Dingo,

No, it will be the Family, Family, Family, Baked Beans, Family, Family and Family Research Group.

I’m getting pretty sick of groups whose express purpose is to prevent the formation of families calling themselves “pro-family.”

Hah! They fooled you, they aren’t another group of bigots – they’re the same bigots in another group.

Feels prestigious & all to be the leader of a dozen groups even if they all have the same membership.

  • DaveL

Well, you see, the whole point is to get more people supporting their ideology.

And given that since Citizens United corporations are people, and that they don’t have that nasty habit of thinking for themselves like actual people people do*, they figured this was the way to go.

*Even when you go through the trouble of indoctrinating them in childhood! The nerve of it all!

I’m going to create my own bigot group too. I’m going to call it the… ummm…

Family liberty freedom family research tradiitonal council. Family.

    Did I mention family?

I really should read the comments before I reply. Now I look like an unoriginal hack. I am of course an unoriginal hack, but I didn’t want it to look that way. Family.

We will be billed as B4 and AFTAH.

This is the equivalent of sending different versions of a chain letter out, knowing each will appeal to adifferent part of the population. Or Clorox’s idea of using fifty different minor additives to sell bleach, knowing each different label or additive will appeal to someone even though it’s all pretty much bleach. They’re just trying to squeeze funds out of their limited pool of contributors by giving the product a new label.

  • Scott Hanley

“Dr. Scott Lively”? I wasn’t aware that he possessed such a degree even from a diploma mill.

I’ll start the “Deists Paying Far Too Much Attention To What Others Do With Their Wee-Wees In The Name Of Family And Shit, Man” coalition. As @RandomFactor and others point out, having only one “Family” in the title of one’s think tank seems just half-hearted by now. On the other hand, I don’t feel the Monty Python references quite manage to capture the sheer crazed obsession with families.

I think the time is right for a new group: Family³ (pronounced “FamilyCube” as a reference to its role model).

  • Dan Robinson

    Read as Sir David Attenborough…

Here we have come across a fairly large group of Common or “Garden” Christians (Homophobis Bigotus). They’ve gathered here at this watering hole for their daily mud bath. They don’t usually exhibit herding behavior however here they seem to be doing just that. Ordinarily different groups treat each other with fierce hatred. This clearly shows how these groups manifest evolutionary change. Let’s see if we can get a little closer. [Whisper] We must be very quiet as we don’t want to disturb them. If they detect our presence they may attack. Ah! Listen carefully! They are doing what biologists call “mud wallow mumbling”. It’s mostly unintelligible but one can clearly hear occasional shouts that resemble human speech such as “haleluia” and “amen”. We’re going to withdraw now as these creatures can be vicious if disturbed in their ritual.
