Vast Majority Support Non-Discrimination

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll finds a record percentage of Americans supporting same-sex marriage and an overwhelming majority, better than 2-1 margin, that says businesses should not be allowed to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation.

Half of all Americans believe that gay men and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll in which a large majority also said businesses should not be able to deny serving gays for religious reasons.

Fifty percent say the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection gives gays the right to marry, while 41 percent say it does not.

Beyond the constitutional questions, a record-high 59 percent say they support same-sex marriage, while 34 percent are opposed, the widest margin tracked in Post-ABC polling…

In the 33 states that prohibit same-sex marriage, 53 percent of those polled support allowing it, while 40 percent oppose doing so…

According to the poll, public opinion is more unified on recent proposals that would allow businesses to refuse serving gays and others based on the religious convictions of the business owner. Nearly seven in 10 respondents say businesses should not be allowed to refuse service to gays. On this question, majorities across partisan lines said businesses should not be allowed to deny service.

Sometimes I lose sight of just how marginal Peter Labarbera and his ilk are. Thanks for the reminder!

The religious right hasn’t thought through their discrimination excused by religion. When Sharia law comes into effect (sometime next week, according to certain pundits) Christians will be the ones discriminated against.

Someone will be unskewing those polls any minute now. Probably even as we speak.

Modus maybe you should ‘unskew’ the polls for us by counting liberal votes as only 3/5.

I wonder how many of those Americans go to church and remain silent when their homophobic preacher starts his rant?

Depends on how you count. They certainly have an overwhelming majority of the “speaks for Republicans” metric. Or, if you will, the “airtime” metric. Which means that in all important regards, they are the Party as the country knows it.

  • “In the 33 states that prohibit same-sex marriage, 53 percent of those polled support allowing it, while 40 percent oppose doing so…”

Is there a break on these figures by state? If there are red states where a majority still oppose marriage equality, that could mean that support in other states is even higher.

In other words, 30% of Americans are hateful assholes who think that the dirty gheys should be refused service. FML.

Trebuchet, I hate you. I was going to say exactly that.

I think that the reason that there are so many anti-gay laws being proposed by conservatives right now is exactly this – that they realize that the tide is swinging against them, and they want to enshrine bigotry into laws ASAP, as it’ll be harder to change once the laws are there. This is especially true of the many state constitutional anti-gay amendments passed over the last 10-15 years.

Gvlgeologist nails it. The radical religious right is in a tail spin, they know that they are hated more each passing day, they understand that there is a tidal wave of disgust from left, middle and right Americans as well as folks all over the world directed at the heart of RRR philosophy.

If you have ever cut the heads off chickens you know what they are going through. The good news is that when chickens stop thrashing, they are dead. The bad news is that these hate filled bastards are not chickens. They will thrash for a very long time.

The other good news is that the pointing and laughing directed at them from more thoughtful people will shrink their influence if not their shrill insistence that other-sex dooms humanity.
