Donald Sterling and the Art of the Notpology

Donald Sterling is speaking out and trying to defend himself against accusations of racism. The result is a predictable mishmash of stupid statements, incoherent statements and a classic “if I said anything wrong” notpology. The interview was on CNN.

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling says he’s sorry but feels he was “baited” to make racists comments, nearly two weeks after the NBA fined him and banned him for life for his remarks in a recorded conversation.

“When I listen to that tape, I don’t even know how I can say words like that. … I don’t know why the girl had me say those things,” he told CNN’s Anderson Cooper in an exclusive interview set to air on Monday.

“You’re saying you were set up?” Cooper asked. “Well yes, I was baited,” Sterling said. “I mean, that’s not the way I talk. I don’t talk about people for one thing, ever. I talk about ideas and other things. I don’t talk about people.”

Well that’s totally believable, isn’t it? He never talks about people. Ever. Sounds totally legit.

“I’m not a racist,” Sterling told Cooper. “I made a terrible, terrible mistake. And I’m here with you today to apologize and to ask for forgiveness for all the people that I’ve hurt.”

Yeah, he’s totally not a racist. All those lawsuits and settlements over racial discrimination in his housing complexes? They don’t count. And when he said that “Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building” and that “black tenants smell and attract vermin,” those were totally not racist. Because he doesn’t talk about people, remember. So he could not have said those things.

Sterling says he’s spoken with Magic Johnson…

“Did you apologize to him?” Cooper asked.

“If I said anything wrong, I’m sorry,” Sterling said. “He’s a good person. I mean, what am I going to say? Has he done everything he can do to help minorities? I don’t think so. But I’ll say it, he’s great. But I don’t think he’s a good example for the children of Los Angeles.”

That’s a rare trifecta. In a single statement he’s given a notpology, tried to distract attention away from himself by criticizing the victim of his racism by saying he hasn’t done “everything he can do to help minorities” and has attacked him yet again. I hope this asshole keeps talking. It’s only going to get worse for him.

Fucktard Sterling has apparently never heard of the law of holes. When you find yourself in a hole, the first order of business is to stop digging.

Suuure he was “baited.” Hmmm…I can’t imagine anything that could possibly bait me into spewing a racist rant. Why? Because I’m NOT A FUCKING RACIST!

  • ambassadorfromverdammt

Dammit, he was baited. The bait was having someone to talk to.

  • anubisprime

And there was Magic Johnson…Wanting to pray for his ass…that’s errr!…just magic?

Bet Sterling’s girlfriend is best pleased with him as well, what a fucking outright coward blaming someone else for your own bigotries.

  • doublereed

I love notpologies. Is there like a compendium of famous notpologies?

  • vilstef

At least he isn’t doing the ultimate non-apology, “I’m sorry you feel that way.”

When I listen to that tape, I don’t even know how I can say words like that. … I don’t know why the girl had me say those things

I… what? …what? I can’t even… What? I guess he could be suffering from a dissociative disorder, but really this just seems like the most transparent lying possible.

Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building

Um, what? Is it not okay if I drink or spend any time in the apartment I’m renting, or in the shared space for the building? Why does he imagine people are renting housing if not to use it for hanging around and possibly drinking? (There is a potentially valid complaint about smoking if the rules prohibit it – in the apartment or within X distance of the doors/air intake – though the generalization about Hispanics is obviously racist as can be.) I promise you that pretty much everyone who rents a place spends time there, and lots of us drink, irrespective of race. What the what? This guy is entirely incoherent.

Here’s another item on Sterling from a year ago.

I’m not going to speculate on how it affects him or his mental state, nor am I fishing for sympathy for him. But you have to wonder if he does stupid things because he’s screwed up, or he’s screwed up because he does stupid things.

as others have said, they should change the first law of holes to be:

    1. Realize you are in a hole.

because really? 99% of the time the problem is a denial you are even in a hole.

Bet Sterling’s girlfriend is best pleased with him as well

Isn’t she suing him? If so, I rather think she IS pleased with the result.

racists are always houses of cards. it barely takes a breeze to get their haphazardly constructed, but convoluted, public faces to come tumbling down.

  • Ichthyic

…ah, it’s more complicated than that, Sterling’s WIFE is the one who filed a lawsuit against Sterling’s girlfriend.

egads these people live disconnected lives.
