Wingnut Blames Shootings on Hippies, Colleges

Warner Todd Huston is one of the duller members of the right wing blogosphere. He used to be part of the Stop the ACLU crowd (might still be, if that page still exists). And he’s blaming the horrific shootings in Santa Barbara on — of course — hippies and universities.

You see, college is not “the time when everyone experiences those things such as sex and fun and pleasure.” College is the time to learn, to study, and to prepare yourself for your life as an adult.

It isn’t a sexual play land where a guy should expect to act out a porn star fantasy.

Unfortunately, that is what people have come to expect in college. It is just a place to have sexual romps, not a place to learn.

The colleges themselves reinforce this idiocy with foolish, anti-intellectual classes like “porn studies,” gay “studies,” and other such non-academic nonsense. The colleges also reinforce this moral corruption by allowing gay clubs, lesbian clubs, and celebrations such as “sex week,” sex toy displays, and visits to campus of people in unsavory and sometimes illegal professions.

This is all nothing new, of course. Colleges and universities stopped being places of learning when America’s worst generation–the yippies and other cretins from the 60s generation–successfully destroyed the authority of the college administration.

Really? Universities aren’t places of learning anymore? Funny, there are vast numbers of people going to college that are, in fact, learning new things every single day. I suppose they might as well stop because random internet dumbass who doesn’t know them has decided that they aren’t really learning at all. That a dolt like this dares to use the phrase “anti-intellectual” is the punchline to the joke.

Most of the hippies, yippies and other cretins I knew back in college in the ’70’s have gone on to become staunch conservative Republicans once they got a piece of the financial/political action. I’ll agree that those are scum having sold out everything they once claimed to believe in.

  • daved

Why am I getting the feeling that Warner Todd Huston never, ever got laid while he was in college?

  • Mr Ed

If I’m reading him correctly he is upset that college students are rolling in the hay instead of building straw men.

  • Synfandel

Warner Todd Huston is probably just venting his disappointment over not having got laid more when he was a fit, young, libidinous student with easy social access to fit, young, libidinous women. Getting old, fat, and grey makes one reflect.

  • smrnda

I also don’t get why the sex and learning must be seen as mutually exclusive.

  • eric

Yeah, those people who grew up in he ’60’s clearly didn’t learn much. It’s why we didn’t see any major scientific advances between 1969 and, say 1999; clearly when the yippies came of age, all progress stopped.

Hippies – is there nothing they can’t do?

Blaming things on “hippies” is such a total cop out because nobody actually claims to be a hippy anymore. It’s like blaming things on the boogeyman.

  • Al Dente

When was the last free-range hippie seen?

  • alanb

I saw what looked like real live hippies in Berkeley about 8-10 years ago. They were selling stuff from a sidewalk cart and appeared to be in their 50s or 60s. It’s hard to believe that they were the ones controlling all of college culture.

That could be taken one of two ways. As a list authored by Woody or a list including Woody. Or both. :)

I see those frequently in Port Townsend, WA. Half the town is stuck in the ’60’s.

Meanwhile, Huston has missed that most of Rodger’s problems seem to date back to high school. If only he’d been homeskooled!

Kids these days, amirite? Yeah, and those who don’t go to college don’t expect anything of the sort, nosireebob.

Or maybe college, like all school, is a place to learn all sorts of things, including various social and sexual things. It would also be a great place to learn not to be a misogynist douchehat – anywhere and everywhere would be. But except for a few, no one seems to be teaching that.

The only thing destroying universities are the upper administration and the boards of directors, and their continual path of charging students more and paying instructors less.

Universities began as learning collectives during the early Middle Ages. When universities also started to be places where young people had sexual adventures? Yeah. The early Middle Ages. I think this guy needs to listen to the Carmina Burana (with a translation of course). P.S. I learned all this at university.

Rumor has it that the hippies have relocated into the mountains of northern Cali. There have been reported sightings of creatures roaming the woods wearing psychedelic clothes with what remains of their fur, or hair, pulled back into pony tails but nothing confirmed. A few blurry pictures is all we have and its impossible to make out anything substantive.

It’s not the hippies, it’s when they let those damned flappers in the colleges,. what with their “Lindy”, and those dresses to the knee! Bah! * shakes fist*

My daughter performed in a city choir that was invited to sing the young choral parts of the Carmina Burana. I was unfamiliar with the work until I got the program and read the translations. I was a bit… surprised at what she was singing about!

    @6:

Synfandel, he looks like the love child resulting from a menage-a-trois involving Wilford Brimley, Johnny BoltOn and Neil Horsley (or maybe Horsely’s mule).

When I fed his name into the anagram maker, using all three names, it wasn’t much fun; but using just his first and last name–

    43. urethra owns no 44. urethra snow no

    45. urethra sown no 46. urethra sown on

    47. urethra snow on 48. urethra owns on

    49. urethra nows on 50. urethra now son

    51. urethra own son 52. urethra won son

    anti-intellectual classes

Well, there’s the oxymoron – spoken by a moron (or should that be moran?) – for today!

If something is a class at university (or school or vocational college etc ..) and is word eg. porn or / & gay followed by the word ‘studies’ it’s pretty safe to say it is NOT going to be anti-intellectual!

As opposed to the fundies who view college as a place to find someone to marry in order to start plopping out kids, not a place to learn.

I remain completely flummoxed as to why the Republican Party is losing the under-30 crowd by 20 or so points. I mean, here you have conservatives doing their best to explain to young people that they’re mindless sex machines and brainwashed idiots, and yet for some reason they just don’t feel the love. I blame the professors.

  • Ichthyic

“When was the last free-range hippie seen?”

Not when, where, and not the last.

    I’d say… Oregon.

I even met a few settlers up in British Columbia; outside of Vancouver.

they walked the walk. I was actually pretty impressed. Very mature families of a couple of generations, living in a geodesic dome house they built themselves (well built, I might add), and subsisting off of their own gardens, wild salmon, and the once a year moose (shot with official permit).

    Moose lasagna is not bad.

really. People who tried to create a mid-way counterculture in the 60s were not actually nuts. they had a point, and a LOT of them ended up doing exactly what they set out to do.

revisionist history on this was mostly written by people of Ronald Reagan’s mindset. Ronald Reagan, who called out the national guard, and military helicopters to spray students from the air with tear gas… because they made a park out of a parking lot.

some people just COULD NOT handle the idea that authoritarian corporate culture was not for everyone. Unfortunately, since they controlled most of the mechanisms for organized violence, they won.

  • Ichthyic

    I blame the professors.

indeed, that’s who the authorities blamed in the 60s as well.

can’t be that innocent students came up with a different way to live all on their own. OH NO. It had to be that someone was teaching them to not be mindless authoritarian sheep.

people forget, or never knew, that indeed many uni profs took a lot of heat for the counter culture movement. Some of the bad feelings were STILL there, simmering just under the surface… even 25 years later when I was a grad student at Berkeley.

in some ways, the battle never really ended.
