Jeffress: Marriage Equality Will Shut Down Christian Radio

Southern Baptist preacher Robert Jeffress is trying really, really hard to scare his congregation and other Christian conservatives over same-sex marriage. On an AFA radio show he said that the Supreme Court will legalize same-sex marriage and then the government will start shutting down Christian radio stations:

“What about stations who have license that are granted by the FCC?,” he asked. “Can the FCC support stations that engage in hate speech or intolerance or that discriminate against the constitutional rights of others? I think that could very well be the basis for denying licenses to Christian stations around the country that want to broadcast the truth.”

Yep, I’m sure that’s totally going to happen.

That reminds me — is Ted Nugent still alive and running loose?

    Quoth Jeffress

Can the FCC support stations that engage in hate speech or intolerance or that discriminate against the constitutional rights of others?

He doesn’t listen to much right-wing radio, does he? [/sarcasm]

*sigh* Another day, another martyrdom fantasy from a fundie.

That reminds me — is Ted Nugent still alive and running loose?

Did Glenn Beck go blind or get arrested and sent to a FEMA camp?

Did Harold Camping or Pat Robertson get Raptured away at the Apocalypse?

Did the 50 million Moslems hidden in the national forests take over the USA?

Did the Chinese soldiers on the Canadian and Mexican borders invade the USA?

Nothing these guys predict will happen, ever happens.

So where is the down side to this story ?

    Re raven @ #3

I can fondly recall the Birch Society Congresscritter, the late and unlamented James Utt from Orange Co., Ca. putting out a newsletter from his office claiming that a quarter million Chinese Communist troops were poised on the border between Baja California and California to invade the US.

If that’s true, I gotta find myself a nice man and settle down.

If we adopt can we shut down Fox News as well?

    infowars Alex Jones 06/24/2009:

The eugenicists are back with their latest program to kill an untold number of people under the cover of the “swine flu pandemic.” If you line up for a vaccination contaminated with mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde and other toxins — and a possible agent for future cancers designed to decimate world population — you need to have your head examined.

However, as Ron Paul indicates, you may not have a choice — the government may force you to choose between a toxic vaccine and a FEMA camp.

According to Alex Jones, the swine flu vaccine is part of a UN program to reduce the population of the world. If you don’t voluntarily get the flu shot, according to Ron Paul, you will be sent to a FEMA concentration camp.

Of course, none of this ever happened. The above was written in 2009 and it is now 2014. The Swine flu vaccine was a success and reduced the mortality of a new flu strain.

And did Alex Jones and Ron Paul and their millions of followers notice this? Not at all. By the time they were proven wrong they were on to the UFO alien invasion and Moslems overruning the Mexican border.

    Raven@3:

With these people the Great Anti-Christian Crack Down is always just around the corner. And when it doesn’t happen, it’s because their faith in Gawd stopped the forces of Satan from taking over once again. But look out! The next wave of predictions is just over the horizon, so send money now!

Jeffress does have a point. If more people were to understand that most of what is broadcast on `Christian’ (right-wing loony) radio is nothing more than twaddle, then they might stop listening, advertisers might stop advertising, and the stations might become insolvent and have to shut down.[*] Fortunately for them, there is little risk of that.

[*] This is known as `Free Enterprise’.

  • petemoulton

Curious that Jeffress openly admits that xian radio stations are broadcasting hate speech, promoting intolerance, and attempting to deny others their constitutional rights, don’t you think?

  • harry

So he freely admits that these stations engage in hate speech and intolerance.

  • Alverant

Yet he freely talks about censoring speech he doesn’t like. The projection is strong in this one.

  • D. C. Sessions

And when it doesn’t happen, it’s because their faith in Gawd stopped the forces of Satan from taking over once again.

This is not exactly a new schtick. Read the Book of Jonah (IMHO a great work of contemporary parody that has gone unappreciated for millennia, much like the Book of Job.)

“I think that could very well be the basis for denying licenses to Christian stations around the country that want to broadcast the truth.”

Anything that stops the broadcast of ‘Christian rock’ or ‘Christian rap’ can’t be all bad.

And that would be a bad thing why exactly?

Using Google’s translation app to convert Ignorant Fundamentalist Cracker Gibberish into English resulted in the following text: Send us all your money.

The odd thing is any speech in this language always translates to the same thing.

  • dugglebogey

See, rights are a zero sum game. I’m sorry, but if we give rights to the homos, they have to come from somewhere, okay? So we will give them the right to get married, and we’ll take away your free speech rights. That way the number is kept the same.

  • anubisprime

he said that the Supreme Court will legalize same-sex marriage

Yep!…the inevitability is not lost even on the most rabid of jeebus shysters.

As for the rest of the screed……well it seems that Jeffress is just a very sexy tease…if only!

As I understand it the Christian segments of the TV and radio are not doing as well as they might. A few major figures are doing well enough but profits of the whole are down. TBN was forced to sell off some of its low-power stations in 2010 and the sector hasn’t recovered. Evidently the granny starving tactics of the GOP have impoverished their viewership and cut donations.

“I think that could very well be the basis for denying licenses to Christian stations around the country that want to broadcast the truth.”

I don’t know any Christian stations that ever broadcast the truth, so I think they’re safe.
