Sudanese Christian to Be Freed?

The Sudanese Christian woman, Meriam Ibrahim, who was sentenced to die by hanging for refusing to renounce her faith (she was raised Christian by her mother, but her estranged father is Muslim and the state therefore declared that she must be Muslim) may be freed soon, according to this report.

A woman sentenced to death in Sudan after marrying a Christian could be released within days, according to reports. A senior Khartoum official has told the BBC that Meriam Ibrahim will be freed following worldwide protests about her treatment.

David Cameron has joined Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Tony Blair in condemning the “barbaric” punishment of the 27-year-old, who gave birth to a daughter this week while shackled in her cell.

Ibrahim was raised a Christian by her mother and has refused to renounce the faith. However, a court ruled earlier this month that she is Muslim because that was her father’s faith. Her Christian marriage was annulled and she was sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery and death by hanging for renouncing Islam. Sex outside a “lawful relationship” is regarded as adultery under Sudanese law.

I sure hope this is true. The world needs a whole lot less of this kind of barbarism. Unfortunately, there are conflicting reports that say otherwise:

Sudan’s foreign ministry on Sunday repudiated a pledge the government would order the release of Meriam Ibrahim, the mother sentenced to death for apostasy, warning only the country’s courts could order her freedom.

Western nations including Britain have expressed outrage that Ms Ibrahim, who gave birth to her daughter Maya in prison last week, had been convicted of changing her faith from Islam to Christianity.

Sudanese officials suggested late on Saturday that the 27-year-old was to be released and her death sentence is to be annulled.

But Abu Bakr al-Sideeg, spokesman for the foreign ministry in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, said on Sunday that only the courts had such powers and foreign ministry officials would have no power over Ms Ibrahim’s case.

“[I am] not aware that any release is imminent”, he added.

I find it absolutely horrifying that any human being could support this and think it’s okay.

So according to islam you don’t get to choose to join you’re considered a member because of your father. Someone said christianity lost its greatest defense when it lost the right of the noose and the sword (or something like that, someone PLEASE correct me). I see the same thing happening to islam. If they couldn’t force people to join or harm them for trying to leave, how many members would it lose?

So if the father is Muslim, the child is also a Muslim. But if the mother is Jewish, the child is Jewish. How is that supposed to work itself out? Or would it cancel itself out and the child be an atheist? I can’t imagine that this particular wrinkle has ever come up in Sudan, but I bet it has to have been a problem somwhere before.
