Jones and Pratt, Together Again

Whenever Larry Pratt of the deranged Gun Owners of America, the group that thinks the NRA are a bunch of weak-kneed appeasers, goes on Alex Jones’ show, you know you’re going to get a paranoiapalooza. Like wingnuts have been claiming for decades, we’re always on the verge of the government using the military to destroy their political enemies.

Jones asked Pratt about a Washington Times report about a 2010 Pentagon directive — an update to a series of similar directives crafted under previous administrations — outlining how and when the military can use force to quell domestic unrest “in extraordinary emergency circumstances where prior authorization by the president is impossible.”

Jones, of course, read this to mean that it is “official and has been confirmed” that the military is “training with tanks, armored vehicles, drones” to “take on the American people, mainly the Tea Party.”

“Well, he’s certainly not thinking that Muslims are a threat,” responded Pratt, “so he’s turning to his political opponents, declaring that they’re the enemy and ignoring the fact that Muslims from time to time have a tendency to go ‘boom.’”

Pratt then cited the 2009 DHS report to claim that the Obama administration has “fingered veterans as potential terrorists, people who believe in the Second Amendment, who are pro-life, who want to work for limited government.”

“I guess the idea of limited government really would terrorize a socialist,” he said, adding, “The enemy is freedom and they really are doing what they can to extinguish it.”

But the reality is that gun fetishists, anti-abortionists and those who say the kind of things people like Jones and Pratt say about the evil government out to destroy them have committed more terrorist acts in the United States than Muslim terrorists have ever done. They’ve blown up abortion clinics, murdered doctors, bombed government buildings, gone on shooting sprees, killed police officers, blown up synagogues and mosques. There’s a reason why the government focuses on right-wing extremism — it’s damn dangerous.

  • You know they’re right! Obama’s the paranoid and fearful one! Why else would the president commission the DHS report before he was even the president?

    Do you think that maybe, perhaps, if the right-wing nutcases would stop calling for the violent overthrow of the government that …

    But Both Sides Do It!

    Although, granted, you have to define Al Qaeda as “leftist” to make the numbers come out anywhere even.

    @DC Sessions:

    Or go back far enough in time, when abolitionists had their John Browns.

    But then you still have a definitional problem: the secessionists clearly started the civil war, and that was undoubtedly “violence for a political purpose”.

    So what are you gonna do? It’s not like we don’t have whack-a-loon leftists who kill animals by the scores and hundreds by “releasing” them from labs. It’s not like they don’t occasionally firebomb some SUVs in Eugene or some McMansions in, I can’t remember, Arizona or New Mexico. And sure, some of the whack-a-loons on the left actually killed or injured people back in the late 60s/early 70s.

    But the anti-integrationists were famously responsible for many killings. Then there’s John Wilkes Booth. I mean, you’ve probably got to define the revolutionary war as leftist terrorism and the civil war as apolitical to have a definition (however ridiculous) that contains more left-wing political killers than right-wing political killers.

    Crip Dyke, Right Reverend Feminist FuckToy of Death & Her Handmaiden – Another big difference – Democratic (or Green, or Socialist) politicians in the US do not have to embrace the ideas of the loony left. They don’t even have to know what they are. The Republicans can’t successfully field candidates in their own primaries who can’t satisfy the craziest of their constituents. Being bigoted, hateful, and paranoid are bad enough, but when they are actively fighting accepted science, economics, and history, then their party can’t be anything but doomed to failure.

    Can still do a lot of damage on the way down, however.
