Wingnut Worries About ‘Mexichusetts’

Jeffrey Kuhner is your standard issue right wing radio show host, having nothing to offer but ignorance, xenophobia and dumb ideas. And he’s very concerned that Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is turning that state into “Mexichusetts” by helping out a few hundred child refugees.

“As Shakespeare would put it, it is the national question: Shall we be or not be? Shall we exist as a nation jealous of its sovereignty, faithful to its law and its Constitution, protective of its citizens, or are we going to be transformed into a socialist third world banana republic which does what Mini-Me wants to do, what he is in the process of doing, if we don’t stop him now?” Kuhner said. “Because he is going to turn Massachusetts into Mexichusetts. And my answer to him is loud and clear: No mas, no more!”

By “Mini-Me,” Kuhner appears to be referring to Gov. Deval Patrick, who has introduced a plan to temporarily shelter 1,000 of the Central American children who have fled to the U.S. southern border.

That’s right. All this outrage is because the government is going to temporarily house a thousand child refugees — who aren’t even from Mexico, by the way, but from Central America (all the same thing, I’m sure, to Kuhner). One thousand children staying in a state with 6.5 million people is going to transform the entire state and destroy the constitution and American sovereignty. The only thing they have to sell is fear itself.

These are homeopathic children, the fewer they are the more powerful they become.

  • “socialist third world banana republic”? Seems like a contradiction to me. Aren’t banana republics countries where governments are controlled by big business, profiting of poor workers?

  • D. C. Sessions

Deen, you need to bear in mind that bananas are vegetables that bear fruits and have huge leaves. And fruits, leaves, and vegetables are all salad ingredients. Therefore, “banana republic” is just a word salad ingredient.

What is the real reason conservatives hate immigrants so much? Is it greed?

  • @dugglebogey,

I was always under the impression it’s just a boogyman used to drum up support ($$$). Just keep hitting on peoples inherent xenophobia and “othering”. Add justifications of job stealing, resource hogging unproductive members of society, and watch the dollars come in.

  • dugglebogey “What is the real reason conservatives hate immigrants so much? Is it greed?”

Us Conservatives don’t “hate” them. We earned what we got. They didn’t. Instead, they’re trying to Mooch this country We made Ourselves with no help from anybody, and there’s no chance in hell we’re gonna let anyone except those above us take it from us.

And also We punch down, preferably against those who can’t punch back.

It’s a little thing called Patriotism.

The Texas response to this crisis has been horrifying to watch. So much for Christian charity:

“Why are we taking refugees when we have children starving in America?” Because you previously declared poor people in the U.S. lazy freeloaders and refused to help them.

“We can’t afford to care for these children?” Really? Have you done the math? Maybe if everyone downgraded their SUV to a sensible car.

“They should go back to their families.” Assuming they still have families. Assuming their families aren’t the ones they’re fleeing from.

And then there are the outright xenophobes who talk about diseases and invasions and keeping America American. (Would that the Apache, Comanche, and Wichita tribes tried that.) A judge in Dallas tried to house some of the children here, and protesters camped out on his front lawn. And all these Christian leaders are just so very empathetic towards these poor children as they authorize the National Guard to turn them back at the border.

MO – “Us Conservatives don’t “hate” them. We earned what we got inherited. ”

Does that mean clam nachos are coming to Mass. soon?

Before Massachusetts was Mexichusetts, it was…Mickachusetts.

All those poor, starving, disease ridden Irish came in and took all the unskilled jobs. It was a disaster.

Next thing they knew, the Kennedys had mansions on Beacon Hill and at Hyannisport.

I get the feeling that all this has happened before. Jeffrey must be remembering the great struggle of his ancestor Patrick Henry Kuhner, who stood before the House and said:

Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Forbid it, Almighty God! Our destroyers are already in the fold! The next breeze that springs from the north will bring to our ears the smell of tortillas y frijoles! I know not what curse others may take up, but as for me, I have nothing to offer but hate, fear, ignorance, and bigotry. For the only thing we have to fight is truth itself. We will fight it on the beaches; we will fight it on the landing grounds; we will fight it in the fields and in the streets; we will fight it in the hills; we will never surrender. We will fight it so that this nation shall have a new birth of fiefdom, and that government of the wingnuts, by the wingnuts, and for the wingnuts, shall not perish from the earth.

Make that Abraham Roosevelt Winston Patrick Henry Kuhner.

    (I couldn’t fit Shakespeare in there no-how.)

Shall we be or not be?

    Well, let’s see.

Shall we exist as a nation jealous of its sovereignty,

What does this even mean? If he means are the Tea Baggers jealous of the US government’s power over the US, then yes. Yes, you are.

faithful to its law and its Constitution,

Two different things? Well, Tea Baggers are notoriously unlawful and hold the real Constitution in contempt (unlike the Shadow Constitution, the imaginary idol in their mind which they worship)

    protective of its citizens,

Only its citizens who are filthy rich. The working class white males, not-whites, women, and especially children, well, if the Tea Baggers don’t notice you, you’re own your own. If they do notice you, run! (Run serpentine!)

or are we going to be transformed into a socialist third world banana republic […]?”

    Yes, but without the socialism.

We here in the Bay State have long been aware of our nationwide reputation as “Taxachusetts”. Now, as we take on the additional monicker of “Mexachusetts”, we recognize a rare opportunity to invite our fellow Americans to pay a visit and discover the gastronomic delights of our unique Tax-Mex cuisine.

The real fear here couldn’t be plainer. As the US becomes browner, the wingnuts screech louder.

They know that the old white guys are going to be in the minority sooner or later.

Every brown person who enters this country makes that inevitability come sooner, and that scares the shit out of them.

  • dingojack

magistramarla – ironically those stains — are BROWN!

I wonder if he feels chumship with the Massachusett since he and they would seem to share the same general idea about newcomers. Though, unlike JK, the Massachusett would have had legitimate concerns about the newcomers.

  • That surname Kuhner, doesn’t sound like an original ‘Merican name to me, must have come from some kind of economic migrants some time in the past. send him back to where he came from.

Lordy knows that, with another 1,000 liberal votes in Massachusetts, it will turn from a conservative haven located somewheres between Alabama and Mississippi into a liberal hellhole that only belongs somewhere in the Northeast of Americastan!

  • A. Noyd

I hate it so much when xenophobes use the language of the people they’re hating on in their tirades I want to knock their teeth down their throats with a brick. Or when they do that fake accent thing.

  • Evan Brehm

Kuhner is himself from Canada. He was born and raised there.

  • conway

Shakespeare, Austin Powers and Roberto Duran in the space of one paragraph? I stand in awe.

But good gawd do I hate it when people whose cultural references come from things they’ve heard of only because they’ve heard them parodied try to use Shakespeare like that.

  • @12:

This may be hard to believe but I have lived in NE, MA, NH, ME, FL and NY and they ALL have the worst taxes in the U.S., true story,

Certain areas of MA, for instance Haverhill, Methuen and Lawrence have undergone so many successive waves of immigration that people who live in houses sidebyeach, eat kepusta tacos with feijoada and wash it all down with Moxie, minge me!

  • So THAT’s where those El Mexiqaeda siesta-cells are operating! Clever bastards. No wonder I couldn’t find any evidence of them in Arizona or Texas.
