Rand Paul’s Conflicting Excuses for Quick Exit

You may have noticed on that video I posted recently of Steve King being a douchebag to a young Latina that Rand Paul made a hasty exit the moment she showed up. He’s now offered two completely different explanations for why he did it. His first excuse was that it had nothing to do with the woman, he just had to go to an interview:

SEN. RAND PAUL: Now you know my life, my life on the campaign trail. But about five minutes before that or two minutes before that the video doesn’t show that another reporter came up and said will you do an interview. And I said I need to take a couple more bites and we’ll do an interview, and then I was told we had to leave and I had to do the interview.

But now he says he just didn’t want any part of the situation because he didn’t want to be “filmed and berated” by someone who was here illegally.

Explaining his departure Wednesday during a radio interview in Iowa, Paul said, “I’ll be honest with you, I’m not interested in being filmed and berated by people who broke the law and are here illegally to try and convince me about policy.”

So he Rand. He Rand so far away-ay-ay.

About Ed Brayton

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

I wonder how he’d handle Vladimir Putin. Putin might glare at him or something.

I’m still trying to figure out how a person, brought here as a babe-in-arms, can be considered to have broken the law. I suppose she should have self-deported upon reaching her majority. But, I have this vague recollection that Obama had something to say about that.

Otherwise known as the “urgent haircut” ploy.

  • Phillip IV

He’s now offered two completely different explanations for why he did it.

That just shows how much he’s committed to the idea of a free and pluralistic society: in order to facilitate people having different opinions, he offers several alternative versions of history to believe in. Remember, only Sith deal in absolutes!

    @eoraptor:

I’m pretty sure that’s what they want. They want a person who lived in this country their entire lives, knew nothing but this country and found friends, family, and education here to just up and go to a country they’ve never known.

Wait. Did he come up with these two different explanations? It’s possible he didn’t read the comments section he lifted them from closely enough to see they were different.

Maybe he had to get to an interview by someone who wasn’t a berating, illegal immigrant?

Curse you Ed Brayton, now I’ve got that Flock of Seagulls song stuck in my head.

If breaking the law disqualified one from talking policy, the Capitol would be empty. The White House would also be empty…and I’m not so sure about the Supreme Court building, either.

People who think that way aren’t thinking of any sort of written law you or I would recognize- they’re thinking of sin, in this case, something of the original kind. A rule has been broken, someone Other was involved, and they need to pay.

The song was bad enough, but now that you named the group, I can’t get the singer’s hairdo out of my head.

Randy little Randy got scared of answering a question and ran away

    eoraptor,

The best student I ever taught did exactly that. He had lived in Texas since he was 7 years old, graduated from high school as second in his class (He could have been first, but he didn’t want to draw attention to himself), and then graduated from college with a degree in chemical engineering and a 4.0 average.

Afraid that he might be deported, he moved to South Korea, which he hadn’t seen since he left as a child. This county’s loss was South Korea’s gain.
