Burkman Claims ‘Thousands’ Will Boycott Cowboys Over Michael Sam

Michael Sam has been signed by the Dallas Cowboys and Jack Burkman, the Republican lobbyist and world class bigot, says that he’s going to lead a boycott at the Cowboys stadium this weekend to protest that fact. Apparently, it’s an attack on Christianity for a gay person to get a job.

The move angered anti-LGBT Christians, who had threatened to boycott the Rams before Sam was released.

“We cannot just stand idly by as Christian values and morals are trampled,” said Jack Burkman, the GOP lobbyist working to keep Sam out of the NFL. “We will do whatever we can to preserve family values in this country.”

Christian values and morals are trampled because a gay football player got signed to a football team? By what possible reasoning other than rank bigotry?

he conservative lobbyist claims his threatened boycott would have cost the Rams “tens of millions of dollars,” a fate he said now awaits Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

“Jerry Jones has betrayed American values, Christian values, and his own city’s values,” Burkman said. “The people of Dallas – and Christians all across this land – are about to make him pay a huge financial price. The Cowboys are no longer America’s team.”

Wanna bet? I’d be willing to bet that a few dozen people at the most will show up and it isn’t going to cost Jerry Jones a dime.

Fan reaction in Dallas has been mixed, reported KTVT-TV, with some recognizing the team’s defense needs all the help it can get, but others are uncomfortable rooting for a gay player.

“I don’t want my kids looking up to me and say, ‘Daddy, what does that mean that he’s gay?’” one fan said during a radio call-in show.

Oh, I’m sorry. We’ll immediately remove all gay people from the country for you so you don’t have to answer a simple question from your kids. Will that make you happy, asshole?

In the end, there was no protest.

Morals are not what they hired him to trample…

I’m guessing that the pasting they took yesterday will have a lot more influence on sales than Sam’s presence.

The Cowboys are no longer America’s team.

It’s well past time the city abandoned that bit of unbelievable arrogance, anyway. If Sam gets you to do what you should’ve done years ago, good.

The Cowboys are no longer America’s team.

Wait, I thought the Cowboys were there team most people outside Texas hated and why few people complain about the institution of the payroll cap.

but others are uncomfortable rooting for a gay player.

That verb has a very different meaning in Australia.

According to friends involved, about 7 anti-protesters showed up, and the protest was cancelled at the last minute. Color me shocked.

@3 The Cowboys are the most loved, and most hated team in the NFL, Yankees Lite.

The only thing Cowboys fans are protesting is a terrible team. Yesterday it seemed that half the seats in AT&T Stadium were filled with 49er Faithful, most of whom got their tickets through secondary markets like Stubhub.

Let’s see. After years of placing a subpar team on the field lead by a quarterback who can choke on jello, and a defense that could not stop a paraplegic 92 year old from gaining a hundred yards on the ground, and after years of caring more about the inventory of the Victoria’s Secrets, than the backfield, it’s signing a talented athlete, whose college game may or may not translate well into the pros, to the practice squad that is going to drive fans away.

Heh, I can only imagine the rightwinger heart palpatations if someone said they Baracked for Michael Sam. (Yeah, I know, it’s “barrack.” But you also know these guys would hear that word and immediately think of Obama).

If they could go out and win a Super Bowl, Cowboys fans wouldn’t care if the entire team was made up of homosexuals.

I’m really conflicted about this. On the one hand, I want the bigots to continue being unhappy. On the other hand. if the boycott is successful, it will hurt the Cowboys’ bottom line and anything that hurts the Cowboys is usually a good thing.

Where’s Stevo ‘the Muddled Headed Wombat’ when you need him? He’ll root for the poor ol’ Cowboys.

He eats, roots, shoots and leaves.*

It’s not even clear that the Cowboys are the worst team in their division. The Deadskins, Giants, and Eagles ain’t too hot either.

Apparently the protest was cancelled because of “death threats” against the good Christians who were going to protest the very existence of a fellow human being.

“It doesn’t have any effect on your life. What do you care?! People try to talk about it like it’s a social issue. Like when you see someone stand up on a talk show and say, ‘How am I supposed to explain to my children that two men are getting married?’… I dunno. It’s your shitty kid. You fuckin’ tell ’em. Why is that anyone else’s problem? Two guys are in LOVE and they can’t get married because you don’t want to talk to your ugly child for five fuckin’ minutes?” — Louis C.K.

The NFL is chock full of sinners. Adultery is commonplace, even celebrated. Public intoxication and brawling is business as usual. There are even killers, mostly manslaughter from drunk driving, but a couple of straight up murderers too. But two men loving each other, that’s the sin that crosses the line. I don’t think I’ll ever understand the right-wing version of morality.

  • busterggi

Those two dozen or so that show up to not go to the game are really going to drag down the tv revenues.

  • John Pieret

The NFL is chock full of sinners.

Let’s not forget a 220 lb athlete who thought it was ok to sucker punch a woman in a public elevator. But then they may not think abusing women is a sin.

(TMZ has a video of Ray Rice taken from inside the elevator and the NFL is making noises about upping his two game suspension.)

Note to Jack Burkman: Nobody cares.

Every single NFL player works on Sundays. Violate one of the 10Cs? Christians have no problem. Violate a relatively minor rule in Leviticus, a book full of rules nobody follows? Christians like this guy freak the fuck out.

  • naturalcynic

@ DCW: that’s just how I feel. Damn you, Jerry J, for causing my inner conflict.

@Loqi: What kind of ‘murrikan are you? I can’t think of anything more sacred than fu’bawl.

  • David C Brayton

If only thousands would boycott football because it glorifies violence.

Unless you’ve hammered hateful nonsense into your kids’ heads, this is how the conversation will go:

‘Daddy, what does that mean that he’s gay?’

‘It means that he has a boyfriend instead of a girlfriend’

‘Oh. Can I have a juice box?’

    re cptdoom:

Apparently the protest was cancelled because of “death threats” against the good Christians who were going to protest the very existence of a fellow human being.

I posted this to PZ’s Thunderdome yesterday because I have to live in Dallas.

Just saw local Fox news say that the anti-gay protest against Dallas signing Michael Sam was cancelled “due to death threats”. Right, and it had nothing at all to do with the protest being a fake from the very start, which nobody but LGBTQ Nation seems to have gotten right.

“We had planned to protest in St. Louis on Sunday. Now we’ll rally in Dallas instead,” said Jack Burkman, who heads the group American (Sports) Decency. “We cannot just stand idly by as Christian values and morals are trampled. We will do whatever we can to preserve family values in this country.”

Burkman claims his group has 3.62 million members in 41 states, including 933,912 people in Texas. His website boasts: “Of 3.62 million nationally, 2.21 million are ready to protest or do whatever they are asked to do.” His website-linked Facebook page, however, has only 135 followers.

But Burkman can say those nasty gay activists sent him death threats and that’s worth credulously repeating during halftime of the f’n’ Dallas Cowboys season opener in Dallas. I’m sure that won’t color anyone’s view of the local LGBTQ community AT ALL.

As a Cowboys fan that has to deal with far too many terrible fans, all I can say is “good.” This fanbase has enough idiots, we don’t need more.
