Jessa Duggar Thinks Evolution Caused the Holocaust

I’m sure it will come as a shock to find out that Jessa Duggar, one of the dozen and a half or so homeschooled Quiverful fundamentalists of reality TV fame, is an ignoramus who mindlessly repeats ridiculous talking points about how evolution somehow caused the Holocaust.

Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution is to blame for the deaths of millions in Nazi concentration camps, according to 21-year-old reality TV star Jessa Duggar.

“I walked through the Holocaust Museum again today,” she wrote in post on Instagram, “very sobering. Millions of innocents denied the most basic and fundamental of all rights–their right to life. One human destroying the life of another deemed ‘less than human.’ Racism, stemming from the evolutionary idea that man came from something less than human; that some people groups are ‘more evolved’ and others ‘less evolved.’ A denying that our Creator–GOD–made us human from the beginning, all of ONE BLOOD and ONE RACE, descendants of Adam. The belief that some human beings are ‘not fit to live.’”

Funny, but very few Christians believed that the Bible taught any such thing until just the last few decades. In fact, some of Christianity’s most influential thinkers believed quite the opposite, that God had created multiple races and cursed some of them (the Hamitic theory of race). And if you’re looking for one of the real causes of the Holocaust, look no further than Martin Luther, Germany’s most influential theologian and the founder of Jessa Duggar’s Protestant faith, who wrote:

What then shall we Christians do with this damned, rejected race of Jews? Since they live among us and we know about their lying and blasphemy and cursing, we can not tolerate them if we do not wish to share in their lies, curses, and blasphemy. In this way we cannot quench the inextinguishable fire of divine rage nor convert the Jews. We must prayerfully and reverentially practice a merciful severity. Perhaps we may save a few from the fire and flames [of hell]. We must not seek vengeance. They are surely being punished a thousand times more than we might wish them. Let me give you my honest advice.

First, their synagogues should be set on fire, and whatever does not burn up should be covered or spread over with dirt so that no one may ever be able to see a cinder or stone of it. And this ought to be done for the honor of God and of Christianity in order that God may see that we are Christians, and that we have not wittingly tolerated or approved of such public lying, cursing, and blaspheming of His Son and His Christians.

Secondly, their homes should likewise be broken down and destroyed. For they perpetrate the same things there that they do in their synagogues. For this reason they ought to be put under one roof or in a stable, like gypsies, in order that they may realize that they are not masters in our land, as they boast, but miserable captives, as they complain of incessantly before God with bitter wailing.

Thirdly, they should be deprived of their prayer-books and Talmuds in which such idolatry, lies, cursing, and blasphemy are taught.

Fourthly, their rabbis must be forbidden under threat of death to teach any more…

Fifthly, passport and traveling privileges should be absolutely forbidden to the Jews. For they have no business in the rural districts since they are not nobles, nor officials, nor merchants, nor the like. Let them stay at home…If you princes and nobles do not close the road legally to such exploiters, then some troop ought to ride against them, for they will learn from this pamphlet what the Jews are and how to handle them and that they ought not to be protected. You ought not, you cannot protect them, unless in the eyes of God you want to share all their abomination…

To sum up, dear princes and nobles who have Jews in your domains, if this advice of mine does not suit you, then find a better one so that you and we may all be free of this insufferable devilish burden – the Jews…

Luther tilled the ground into which Hitler planted the seeds of madness. And Hitler himself justified the Holocaust on the grounds of Christianity many times. Like this, from a 1922 speech:

My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded only by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison. To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before in the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice…. And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people…. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom to-day this poor people is plundered and exploited.

And from 1933:

Except the Lord built the house they labour in vain…. The truth of that text was proved if one looks at the house of which the foundations were laid in 1918 and which since then has been in building…. The world will not help, the people must help itself. Its own strength is the source of life. That strength the Almighty has given us to use; that in it and through it we may wage the battle of our life…. The others in the past years have not had the blessing of the Almighty– of Him Who in the last resort, whatever man may do, holds in His hands the final decision. Lord God, let us never hesitate or play the coward, let us never forget the duty which we have taken upon us…. We are all proud that through God’s powerful aid we have become once more true Germans.

Now, this does not mean that Christianity actually supports the Holocaust, of course. Hitler used every argument he could with any audience he was in front of to convince them to go along with his barbaric plan. But the same is true of evolution, which certainly does not support any such thing.

A denying that our Creator–GOD–made us human from the beginning, all of ONE BLOOD and ONE RACE,

Is it just me or does that capitalism scream Nazism to you? She seems to be saying we needed more “Ein Volk” thought during WWII.

It’s also worth pointing out many of Darwin’s most vociferous critics objected to the theory of evolution on the grounds that it implied Caucasians shared common ancestry with all the other races. At the time, conventional thought suggested that each race had its own Adam and Eve counterparts (polygenism) or that other races weren’t descended from an Adam-analogue at all, being no better than the beasts of the field (at least in the eyes of white Europeans).

“Darwin promoted RACISM!” is an almost comically fatuous claim, and reflects a profound ignorance of history. To paraphrase a famous rabbi, the racists are with us always.

“More evolved” has to be one of the most compact ways to say “I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about” I’ve ever encountered.

Such a waste of sperm and an egg.

As I have pointed out numerous times on this blog and others, Heidler rejected common descent in Mein Kampf so he was a creationist, just like pissants like Dugger.

Considering the Holocaust – it wasn’t all that secret, rumors had been going around for years and the public brutality of Kristelnacht and the general treatment of Jews did nothing to disbeliever those rumors. Certainly the chaplains in the German military knew about it as did their superiors and while the Nazi party opposed the power of the churches it shouldn’t have stopped them from exposing the Holocaust in other countries yet none of them did.

For that matter anti-semitism was pretty popular in the US at the time, pretty much all the fringe, and even not too fringe, Christian organizations like the Christian Front supported the Nazis and opposed US involvement in the war as it was supporting Judaism in their view.

Christians, happy promoting ignorance since before the Dark Ages.

Ironically, it is modern evolutionary genetics that proves all humans have common descent from Africa, exactly opposite from the beliefs of Western Europeans throughout the centuries when Christianity (in whatever form) was the dominant religion and Europeans were interacting with the rest of the globe.

I’m slowly reading through Charles Darwin’s Descent of Man. It’s my first reading of him beyond a couple of paragraphs here and there. The two most surprising observations are Darwin’s wisdom and his integrity. I better appreciate why science historians are in awe of Mr. Darwin (I was already aware of his caution and his work ethic).

Wisdom and integrity are attributes that I find to be a rare attribute in Ms. Duggar’s tribe, if it’s even existent; to the point I’m confident most of Ms. Duggar’s allies can’t even discern when these attributes are being practiced.

… how evolution somehow caused the Holocaust.

Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution is to blame for the deaths of millions in Nazi concentration camps, according to 21-year-old reality TV star Jessa Duggar.

May I point out that those are two very different theses?

Evolution actually did cause the Holocaust, insofar as it caused the biological state of the world … but the theory of evolution most certainly did not.

The map is not the territory.

“Racism, stemming from the evolutionary idea …”

Even IF evolutionary ideas led to racism, it still wouldn’t be an argument against evolution. I know that’s obvious but what sort of education leads you to argue against a scientific theory not on the merits of the science, but because of some bogus link to some social ill? Oh, wait – home schooled by fundamentalists?

So close. Just drop the first ‘e’ and replace the ‘d’ with a ‘t’, and you’re there.

She is right. The SS had on their belt buckles the slogan “Gott mit uns”, which literally translates into “Gott with uns”. This is actually a phrase that translates (it is too complicated to delve into here) into “With the Jews, they must die because of the evolutions.” But she only learned of it b/c of her top-notch home schooling. Our kids never learn this! Thanks, Obama! Thanks common core! Thanks, Benghazi! (….BENGHAZI!!1111111111)

But in “The Descent of Man” Darwin did predict that the “savage races”…as defined by Darwin…would be wiped out by the advanced races.

Better face it. He was a racist.

Okay, just a few examples from the Wikipedia article Racism in the United States:

In a manner that defines interpersonal discrimination in the United States, Darryl Brown of the Virginia Law Review states that while “our society has established a consensus against blatant, intentional racism and in decades since Brown v Board of Education has developed a sizeable set of legal remedies to address it”, our legal system “ignores the possibility that ‘race’ is structural or interstitial, that it can be the root of injury even when not traceable to a specific intention or action”[145]

Interpersonal discrimination is defined by its subtlety. Unlike formal discrimination, interpersonal discrimination is often not an overt or deliberate act of racism.

(This is critical to understanding racism in the United States. Most people displaying racist behavior do not think of themselves as racist. After all, we “know” racists are overtly, explictly bigoted people like the villains of 12 Years a Slave/em> or The Help; I’m not like that, goes the thinking, therefore nothing I do is racist.)

Massive racial differentials in account of wealth remain in the United States: between whites and African Americans, the gap is a factor of twenty.

Racism has been noted in all levels of the U.S. justice system. According to 2009 congressional testimony from Marc Mauer; while African Americans comprise 13% of the US population and 14% of monthly drug users they are 37% of the people arrested for drug offenses; as well as 56% of the people in state prisons for drug offenses. The U.S. Sentencing Commission reported in March 2010 that in the federal system black offenders receive sentences that are 10% longer than white offenders for the same crimes.

It’s convenient for white Americans to pretend racism conclusively ended in 1865, or 1968, but the truth is it’s still around — it’s just considered ever-so-impolite to mention it. Meanwhile, those with vested interests in perpetuating racism have learned to mask it with dogwhistles and loaded language; the Republican Party has made racism an unofficial platform, all in a way that gives them plausible deniability and lets them wring their hands and clutch their pearls if their opponents rudely mention the r-word. Again, fide Wikipedia:

In a study analyzing how political ads prime attitudes, Valentino compares the voting responses of participants after being exposed to narration of a George W. Bush advertisement paired with three different types of visuals with different embedded racial cues to create three conditions: neutral, race comparison, and undeserving blacks. For example, as the narrator states “Democrats want to spend your tax dollars on wasteful government programs”, the video shows an image of a black woman and child in an office setting. Valentino found that the undeserving blacks condition produced the largest primed effect in racialized policies, like opposition to affirmative action and welfare spending.

But don’t take their word for it. Just ask GOP strategist Lee Atwater. Here’s his response when asked about Reagan’s appeal to southern white “Wallace voters”:

You start out in 1954 by saying, “N*****, n*****, n*****.” By 1968 you can’t say “n*****” — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I’m not saying that. But I’m saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N*****, n*****.”

But hey, don’t take Lee’s word for it either. Ask a few black friends if racism still exists in the United States. They’ll tell you.
