Senator Shares Fake George Washington Quote

And here we go again, yet another conservative sharing a fake quote from one of the founding fathers. Only this time it’s a Republican Senator, Chuck Grassley:

If u love America u hv to appreciate GeoWashington He once averred that”It is impossible to rightly govern the world w/o God and the Bible”.

Apparently loving America requires that you appreciate invented quotations.

About Ed Brayton

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

But … but … it’s what George Washington should have said …

He (or, more precisely, the staffer that actually posts) should have known it was fake. George Washington isn’t even on Twitter.

About GW quotes: does anybody know if the conservatives’ favorite is true? I’m referring to the one about (paraphrasing) “don’t call me king, call me Mr. President.”

John Pieret – No, no — it what (Elias) Washington thinks his more famous namesake might possibly, maybe, would have said (if asked a leading question by a WhirledNutsDaily ‘Journalist’), in order to fulfil Elias’ expectations.

Even if it were a real quote, why would talking positively about “governing the world” indicate a love for America? I thought conservatives felt that “globalism”and “world government” were the antitheses of patriotism?

I thought conservatives felt that “globalism”and “world government” were the antitheses of patriotism?

Not as long as it is True Americans™ who are governing the world … and not those brown people!
