Joyner: God Gives Black Athletes Millions to Make Up For Slavery

It seems that about once a week or so, a Christian right leader makes a statement that makes me tilt my head to the left the way a dog does when you’re hiding the ball from him. This statement by Rick Joyner about why God allowed slavery in America and how he’s making up for it now is a good example:

“As the Lord showed me many years ago,” he said, “He sent the blacks to our country to help teach us about freedom and liberty. You say ‘they were made slaves, how are they going to know about freedom and liberty?’ Wasn’t Israel in prison, I mean they were made slaves to Egypt. You know, the only two people groups in history that were enslaved because of their race were the Israelites and the black people.”

Citing the passage in Exodus in which the Egyptians shower the Israelites with riches as payment for their years of slavery, Joyner then said that the same thing is happening today with black professional athletes.

“I believe that’s one reason for all the high salaries for athletes today,” he said. “I rejoice in it. The bigger the salary that are mostly going to minorities, I’m saying that’s the Lord doing that. They may not use it right or anything, but the Lord is going to repay them.”

Wha?

No, I cannot read the transcript of Joyner’s twisted logic.

a Christian right leader makes a statement that makes me tilt my head to the left the way a dog does

That’s a lot less painful than when my head hits the desk. Can you lend me your dog?

  • robertfoster

And casinos are god’s way of repaying the Indians for the loss of their homelands. Seems like a fair trade to me.

  • cptdoom

I’m sure Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and the Manning brothers, among others, are thrilled to know they’re receiving God’s compensation for the enslavement of their ancestors.

No wonder they’re always thanking God after winning the game!

“They may not use it right or anything, but the Lord is going to repay them.”

Gotta make sure you get your extra dose of racism in there before you go.

  • Loqi

So the ones born with freakish athletic ability get compensation, but the ones who aren’t 6′ 6″ and can’t run 40 yards in under 5 seconds get no piece of that pie. Not to mention he gives the same compensation to equivalently athletic whites whose ancestors very well could have been the owners of their teammates’ ancestors. That hardly seems just. Though to be fair, it’s a bit closer than Yahweh’s other attempts at justice.

“… the only two people groups in history that were enslaved because of their race were the Israelites and the black people.”

    Severe brain damage there.

  • frankgturner

What is really sad about this, it is not new. I have heard this before. If I could figure out where I would post a link.

    .

It makes me think, if God is paying black athletes for the suffering of their parents, and we could demonstrate that Rick Joyner’s ancestors were slave owners, could we arrange for him to be enslaved by a black family as compensation?

  • illdoittomorrow

Well, that’s just mighty fucking white of Him, innit?

  • themadtapper

    I… but it’s… how does he… why is… what…

We’re sorry, the brain you were trying to reach has been disconnected or is no longer in service. Please try your complete lunacy again later.

  • Doug Little

So what about Eric Garner, where’s his compensation?

  • colnago80

Aside from everything else in Joyner’s moronic statement, investigations by archeologists have turned up information that the Israelites were not slaves in Egypt, did not build the pyramids, and the Exodus never happened.

  • grumpyoldfart

Joyner doesn’t believe any of that shit. He deliberately chooses to say it because he knows the atheists will pick up on it and abuse him for it. That, in turn, allows him to play the martyr in front of the congregation – and they fall for it every time.

  • howardhershey

And here I thought it was the (white) team owners that paid their salaries. How many pro teams does God field?

  • moarscienceplz

So omnipotent God looks the other way while millions of people are treated worse than dray animals for 200 years, then he ‘makes up’ for it by granting riches to a tiny percentage of the slaves’ great-great-great-grandchildren. Gosh, what an awesome God! Doesn’t it just make you want to worship the guy? I can hardly keep from falling to my knees in paroxysms of ecstasy.

  • marcus

Loqi @ 7 Hey, those people all related you know. Everything gets shared around.

  • had3

The salary for white athletes is to make up for their ancestors who weren’t lucky enough to be slave owners. That way it’s fair to everyone.

  • peterh

    “…Yahweh’s other attempts at justice…”

    And those would be . . . . . . .

  • dan4

@14: “Joyner doesn’t believe any of that shit.”

Joyner is an idiot…and so are people who think they can read minds. You could have at least put a “probably” qualifier in front of the word “doesn’t.”

  • dan4

@12: Eric Garner wasn’t an athlete. The whole bizarre premise behind Joyner’s argument here rests on only “seeing” African-Americans as professional athletes.

  • yoav

It’s been a while since I read it but if I remember correctly it wasn’t so much the Egyptians showering the Isrealites with gift and more Moses ordering them to borrow stuff from their neighbors, promising to bring it back in a couple of days, and then run away with it. Do you think wall street bankers are decedents of Egyptians peasants getting a reward by god for fucking their ancestors by being allowed to rip off other people.

    Exodus 3

21 And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty.

22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.

Remember boys and girls “Thou shall not steal”…

And why did this happen in the first place?

    Exodus 2

11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.

12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?

14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.

Can anyone say “Thou shall not murder”?

    @@ Dingo

  • DaveL

    @19,

Um, the killing of little Midianite boys because some of their big sisters had consensual sex with Israelites?

The mauling of children by bears for daring to make fun of a prophet’s baldness?

Oh, I know! There was that time he had an innocent man suffer and die, so that he would have an excuse to stop torturing all human being eternally for something their ancestors did before they knew right from wrong.

  • dingojack
  • dhall

Sure, no other ethnic group, other than those two, in all of history, was ever enslaved. Never. Nowhere.

Yeesh. In world history, I sometimes ask my class to name a single ethnic group that was never oppressed by another and/or never oppressed another. Can’t think of too many potential candidates.

  • Kevin Kehres

Gee, and here I thought it was all that selective breeding the slaveowners did in order to get new generations of bigger-stronger field workers.

  • freehand

So, if Yahweh continues compensating the victims of his capricious cruelty this way, we can expect one of Joyner’s great-great-great grandchildren to be really smart, and an all-around decent person to boot?
