Obama’s All-Woman Press Conference

On Friday, President Obama held his end-of-year press conference before heading to Hawaii for a vacation over Christmas. What took place then was almost certainly unprecedented: Every question he answered came from a female reporter. He called on only female reporters. Naturally, Fox News and the right wing blogosphere went into full freakout mode.

There are a couple things that stick out to me about this. First, would anyone even have noticed if he had called on all male reporters? I doubt it. I would bet that has happened innumerable times without anyone even bothering to notice. Because that would be considered normal, wouldn’t it? The only people who might have noticed would be female reporters and feminists, who would immediately be told to stop whining and playing the victim. But let it be all women just one time and the freakout begins.

One could also point out that we have had 44 male presidents in a row and that men comprise the overwhelming majority of all elected officials at every level. But again, when feminists point that out, the same people flipping out over Obama’s press conference tell them to sit down and shut up and stop complaining about such irrelevancies.

Let’s take a look at some of the comments from the wingnutosphere. From Breitbart:

Obama is AlphaMalePhobic. Just look at the top National Security team: Women. He doesn’t want anyone challenging him. Why? He’s afraid.

Yeah, because everyone knows that a woman could never challenge him. Only men can challenge people, amirite?

I think he likes being pushed around by women. You see this a lot in the gay community…

Obama is a a sexist pig…

If he can divide and conquer by racial animus, he can also divide be gender animus as well. The doublespeak continues, – division is ” a unique opportunity.”

Not only can the President play the race card, he has also sanctioned the playing of the gender card. He is making history every day…

Tokens speak to one another, don’t they?

Reverse sexism = sexism. An extraordinarily bigoted way to keep Jonathan Karl and Ed Henry’s tough questions from even reaching Big Ears.

Ah yes. A president who called on all male reporters? That’s totally not “playing the gender card” and trying to “divide and conquer” because that’s the way it’s supposed to be. And all female reporters are obviously just “tokens.” From Fox Nation:

Was MOOOSHEL there or are they both cross dresers?…

Oh my Lord – it’s a full blown WAR on MEN!…

When you can’t take the heat – you stick with the girls on the playground. He knows the boys can see right through him but the girls are easy to confuse…

1st Gay president…..what a wimp….

What’s the problem? Barry’s always been one of the girls.

And being one of the girls would be terrible because girls are icky. Such casual and presumptuous sexism all around.

    I’m bookmarking this under “privilege.”

And why, exactly, are you hanging around in the gay community?

Besides, I thought the meme was that “girls” can’t push anyone around, only manly men can do that.

These people practically ooze their insecurities out of their skins.

Don’t forget “cooties” and “uppity n—-ers”.

The inability to see anything, any issue at all from the perspective of another person is a driving force of this sort of conservatism. Years of domince by white males is irrelevant when you think that the scorecard should be reset to “zero” and take every incident in isolation. That’s why it’s considered “reverse racism.” Race card. Gender card. I’m hurtin’ over here, so I had better lash out.

To be fair, “male”, like “white”, “heterosexual” or “Christian” is the default, normal state. That’s not privilege; that’s Common Sense. And I say this knowing that, conveniently, I fall in to all the default categories.

Garbage like this makes me mad. I mean, come on! Let’s talk about privilege! What more do you girls want? You already get your own ladydoctors for your ladyparts! What, you’re too good to have a “mere” man inspect your mysterious unmentionables? Why? I’m just fine with a man inspecting my genitals!

OMG, I’ll even bet some of the women were wearing pants…

In California, when you complain about the weather, people tell you to wait five minutes and it will be different.

The rightwing mindset is like that. Today they say the President is a wimp, riddled with phobias and afraid of women. Tomorrow (or maybe just five minutes from now) they’ll once again be calling him a tyrannical oppressor who’s out to destroy the country and then take it over — or take it over and then destroy it.

    Who the fuck is “MOOOSHEL?”

  • Uncle Ebeneezer

When I think of men who like to be pushed around by women my mind defaults to scenarios involving straight men enjoying (sometimes even paying) for that sort of thing. Not gay men.

dan4 “Who the fuck is ‘MOOOSHEL?'”

It’s a Beatles song, from what I gather.
