Huckabee: Bible Readings, School Shootings, Blah Blah Blah

Mike Huckabee delivered the standard “the whole country went to hell when we took prayer and Bible reading out” bullshit speech to a conference held by TV evangelist con man Morris Cerullo. Such tiresome and idiotic rhetoric. Yeah, things were so much better when kids were reading the Bible in schools and then using that same Bible to justify setting dogs and firehoses on civil rights marchers.

“Because we were bringing Bibles to school people weren’t bringing guns to school, except for the deer hunters who left them in their trucks,” Huckabee said. “What has happened to our culture? What’s happened is we have lost our landmarks. When we reject the Bible as the objective word of truth, when we say that the Bible is no longer the standard by which we live and we make it whatever we feel, what we think, what we believe, then we have no landmark at all because that landmark is always being moved to accommodate our lifestyle rather than make our lifestyle accommodate the word of the living God and the power of the Holy Spirit.”

When we reject the Bible as the objective word of truth

“Objective”? You keep using that word …

  • Larry

    Who’s “we”, bible thumper man?

  • Mr Ed

I think Douglas Adams was right, this God character is just trying to trip us up. You get up in the morning and say a prayer, grace before breakfast and you you review your favorite passages on the bus. At school you take a second in home room to thank the Lord and you and your friends get together at lunch around the flag pole. More prayer after an exam then straight home for home work and bible class. You spend nearly your whole day devoted to God but because you read Huck Fin in third period instead of Ruth he sends a serial killer to your football rally.

“We’ve lost our landmarks” – Hyuckabee. (1 min 04 secs mark.)

Wait, wut, The Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore and Statute of Liberty disappeared sometime and no one noticed?

“Because we were bringing Bibles to school people weren’t bringing guns to school, except for the deer hunters who left them in their trucks,”

Hear that flushing sound? That’s Huckabee losing the NRA’s endorsement.

The worst case of school violence in US history, the Bath School massacre in 1927, took place when the US was much more overtly Christian. I guess they weren’t preaching the right Christianity in those days.

So why is there a positive correlation between religiosity and those conditions that Huckster complains about? You know — teen pregnancy, violent crime, all that.

  • Sastra

In other words, when there is no one common shared belief … then there will be lots of different beliefs.

OMG, he’s right. I never thought of it that way before!

You want everyone to believe the Bible? Fine. Step One: throw out “Faith.” Step Two: properly establish the existence of God using rigorous scientific standards.

There are many, many more steps before we achieve consensus, of course — but Huckabee and his fellow Christian fundamentalists can go chew on that one for a while. We’ll wait.

““Because we were bringing Bibles to school people weren’t bringing guns to school…”

Really. Hickabee? I remember a kid having a gun in his locker at my Catholic school. (Also a gym teacher who liked Catholic schoolgirls too much, and another kid on the school bus bragging about blowjobs from his babysitter) None of that during my entire public school career.

“Yes, let’s make kids less violent by forcing them to read the most violent book of all time! Then we’ll cut the teen pregnancy and STD rates by making sure they’re completely ignorant of how their bodies — and condoms — work. What could possibly go wrong?” — Christian logics

    “Bath School massacre in 1927”

Ah! But that didn’t involve a gun, which Mr Kehoe quite properly left in his truck, next to the dead deer.

The objective word of truth, that even Christians can’t agree on.

Has the Huckster always been that fat?

  • Larry

Has the Huckster always been that fat?

It’s that hankering for Jello that does him in.

  • dugglebogey

Fair is far. If not reading the Bible in school is responsible for all the bad things that have happened since, then it’s also responsible for all the good things that have happened! Like cell phones, 3D printers and the Pharell Williams song “Happy.”

The country has been going downhill since we banned prayer in school. The country has been going downhill since we got off the gold standard. The country has been going downhill since we gave 18 year-olds the vote, since we gave women the vote, since we gave blacks the vote. The country has been going downhill since we got rid of the draft. The country has been going downhill since we let the Irish in. The country has been going downhill since the New Deal. The country has been going downhill since we got the income tax. The country has been going downhill since we got social security. The country has been going downhill since we got popular election of Senators. And don’t get me started about the internet.

@17 zippy – didn’t the downfall really start when the Baptists demanded the right to practice their heresy and ignore the state churches?

  • Pierce R. Butler

Trebuchet @ # 14: Has the Huckster always been that fat?

He and his whole family were WalMart-stereotype obese until he began to dream of ambitions beyond Arkansas, and forced himself and them to shed hundreds of pounds collectively.

If our esteemed host is correct in seeing Huckabee’s new campaign as a hu$tle, he may not feel the need to maintain such discipline so rigorously any more.

  • abb3w

I wonder how much rejection of moral relativism is the difficulty of dealing with the added complexity of considering alternative viewpoints.

  • Trebuchet

@19, Pierce R. Butler: Thanks for that. Love the vertical stripes on the men in that picture. But now I’m confused. According to Conservapedia, only atheists are fat. And they use Ed Brayton as an example.

  • Randomfactor

More shootings at churches than at schools. So when did they take the prayers out of church?

“Because we were bringing Bibles to school people weren’t bringing guns to school, except for the deer hunters who left them in their trucks,” Huckabee said.

Could this be an inadvertent reference to a 1978 film starring Michael Cimino?
