The Art of the Christian Self-Aggrandizing Humblebrag

This quote from Gov. Scott Walker is a textbook example of using religion to position yourself politically:

“I’m still trying to decipher if this is God’s calling. You’ve got to be crazy to want to be president of the United States. You’ve got to be crazy. To look at what it does to a person and a family, you’ve got to be crazy. But you should only do it if you feel that God’s called you to get in there and make a difference.”

With that single statement he has told voters three things.

1. That being president is such a terrible thing that if he does decide to run, it can only be because he’s a selfless, dedicated public servant who is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

2. That if he decides to run for president, that proves that God is on his side.

3. That he’s completely full of shit and will pander to the rubes as much as he possibly can.

Weird that none of that applies to Obama, though.

I hear god has a sense of humour, so maybe his calling is for Walker to humiliate himself on a national stage.

I pick door number 3. What do I win Monty?

  • Loqi

Don’t most people already assume #3? He’s a politician after all.

Nonsense. The right wing is completely consistent on it. You have to be crazy or be god’s special favorite. That’s what the (D) and (R) after their names stand for. It’s Latin or something.

Funny how God told *several* Republicans he wanted them to run for president. Some (or all) of them are telling naughty fibs, methinks!

  •!/TabbyLavalamp Tabby Lavalamp

So what he’s saying is that if he runs for president, he should be committed?

  • HappyHead

Looking at the lists of Republicans who’ve wanted to run for president over the last several election cycles, I think the party as a whole is taking this “you’ve got to be crazy” a idea little too seriously.

  • Al Dente

How many Republicans have said they’re running or considering running for president because God told them to do so? This God character should pick a favorite and stick with that candidate.

  • ArtK

    @Matt G

No, God really did tell all of them to run. He likes to mess with people. That whole thing about Abraham having to sacrifice Isaac is the ultimate teenage “psych!” joke. Or giving people free will and then punishing them for using it.

During the coming Tea Party presidential primary candidate “debates”, will the moderator require those called by God to provide a transcript of what God told them. Also, why the other candidates were called by Satan.

OT but I feel like I should mention that the coiner of “humblebrag” died last week.

  • aronymous

FFRF sent an open records request to Walker:

“Since your terms as Governor, please provide a copy/transcript of all communications with God, the Lord, Christ, Jesus or any other form of deity.”

Pursuant to the Public Records Law, we are responding to let you know that this office does not have records responsive to your request.

Maybe god can’t be recorded, like a vampire and a mirror. That would explain why others had to write the bible for him.

@11. jnorris says : “During the coming Tea Party presidential primary candidate “debates”, will the moderator require those called by God to provide a transcript of what God told them. Also, why the other candidates were called by Satan.” Well those aren’t exactly theonly two options , I mean there’s way more than one God even when it comes to Christians. Some get called by Jesus, others by the Holy spirit (my fave!) then there’s the Father, Yahweh, Jehovah, etc ..and the Catholic, Lutheran, Serb Orthodox, etc .. ad almost infinitum ..
