Islamist Arrested for Murder of Avijit Roy

Days after atheist writer Avijit Roy was hacked to death with a machete, police in Bangladesh have arrested a reactionary Muslim blogger and charged him with the murder. The man apparently had been threatening to kill Roy on social media for quite some time.

A spokesman for the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said Farabi Shafiur Rahman had been arrested at a bus station in the capital Dhaka over the gruesome killing of Avijit Roy, describing him as the prime suspect in a crime that triggered international outrage.

“He is the main suspect,” RAB spokesman Major Maksudul Alam told AFP.

“He is a fundamentalist blogger,” the spokesman said, adding that according to “primary information” Farabi had threatened Roy through Twitter and Facebook.

“(Roy’s) family told us that he got threats from Farabi several times,” he added…

The RAB paraded Farabi before the press at its headquarters in Dhaka where another RAB spokesman, Mufti Mahmud, described him as a member of the banned pan-Islamist outfit Hizbut Tahrir.

“On different occasions, he exchanged (Roy’s) location, his identity and his family’s photographs with various people,” Mahmud told reporters.

“He wrote: ‘Avijit Roy lives in America. So it’s not possible to kill him at this moment. But when he’ll return to the country, he’ll be murdered’,” Mahmud said.

Unfortunately, there are a whole lot of Farabis in the world, willing to kill someone for daring to reject their religion. He will not be the last murderer and Roy will not be the last victim.

While I’m proud to be a barbarian myself, these murderous savages make me sick. I hope Bangladesh prosecutes appropriately, but I’m not very hopeful, considering their track record. I’m a bit surprised that they bothered arresting anyone.

For all it’s worth to Roy, that’s good solid police work, and I hope it ends in a speedy and impartial trial and a lengthy stay as a guest of the state for the victim of brain poisoning/perpetrator of heavy metal intervention.

We’ve got the same system where I live. When a victim complains about death threats the police say, “Don’t worry about it, if they kill you we’ll get after them quick smart.”

Is Farabi actually the murderer, or is this a case of, “Uh-oh, we’re getting bad publicity. Time to round up the usual suspects”?
