Blackwell Blames Dan Savage for Racist Frat Video

Sometimes wingnuts say things that just leave me scratching my head. Okay, so they do that every day. But this one really leaves me baffled. Ken Blackwell, former Ohio Secretary of State and now a Family Research Council, somehow manages to blame Dan Savage for that racist Oklahoma frat video.

On yesterday’s edition of “Washington Watch,” FRC senior fellow Ken Blackwell connected the chant, which included references to lynching “ni****s,” to Dan Savage’s “coarse” language.

Blackwell told guest host Peter Sprigg, another FRC senior fellow, that it wasn’t a coincidence that the chant came “at a time when you have one of our nemeses, Dan Savage, who is now having his life story being portrayed on a new sitcom on ABC, you know, here’s a guy that’s responsible for the coarsening of civil discussion and conversation being celebrated, at a time when there are knuckleheads who are still spewing from their lips the sort of nonsense that we’ve heard from these fraternity members.”

Right. Because the problem with that video is not the racism, it’s the “coarse language.” And this was said by a black man, for crying out loud.

When this frat story first broke, I figured that it was going to be a bipartisan pile-on, because this is the one kind of racism that conservatives will acknowledge. Clearly I should have known better.

here’s a guy that’s responsible for the coarsening of civil discussion and conversation being celebrated

The civil discussion where people like you call LGBT people demon-possessed, disgusting, Nazis, should-be criminals, pedophiles, and dozens of other slurs? That civil discussion?

May I then offer you, with all due respect, with as much civility as I can muster, a heartfelt “Go fuck yourself!”

Dan Savage? Now that’s just silly. It is obviously hip-hop music that is at fault. (That one from Joe Scarborough and Bill Kristol.)

He’s got a point. After my son heard Dan Savage, he couldn’t stop using the N word. I had to take him aside and tell him, “Son, you don’t need to use words like that. Let me tell you about Lee Atwater.”

Of course, the problem was the language, not the sentiments expressed by this Southernist frat that until this week openly glorified its antebellum Southern roots.

Dan starts out his podcast responding to stuff like this – I’m guessing this will make the rant list check out next weeks podcast at http://www.savagelovecast.com/

Ah, Ken Blackwell–the man who “delivered Ohio to Bush” in 2004.

Yeah, he’s as ethical as he is smart.

I’d bet my smallest catapult that the “song” in question has been sung at a majority of SAE houses for at least 50 years. No need before that because it was taken for granted that all “Greek” organizations were segregated.

    Screechymonkey @1:

There’s now an unwritten rule in conservative circles that racism no longer exists. Call it the Roberts rule. The only exception is when someone points out obvious racism. Then that person is the real racist. But otherwise, this rule enables them to pander to the worst racist impulses in this country. The days of using Lee Attwater’s code words are over. Now you can be as overtly racist as you want and then, if you get called on it, just respond with, “who me? Racist? No way!”

    Buhwhat?

Can someone explain how a black man is harping on language usage, and ignoring the blatant racism, because I just do not get it.

    @ ^ WMDKitty — Survivor : Beats me too.

@ 12. dingojack : Benghazi! Still. Isn’t it always and forever Benghazi?

@8. Trebuchet : No bet. Too safe a proposition there. I agree.
