Staver: Civil Disobedience on Marriage Like Hiding Jews From Nazis

Mat Staver, the dumbest lawyer in America not named Larry Klayman, is a very brave man. So brave that he promises to advocate civil disobedience against same-sex marriage, not to participate in it himself. Because accepting same-sex marriage is just like turning Jews over to the Nazis.

“I know from the natural created order that God made male and female, a mom and dad, husbands and wives as the first foundation of family,” he said. “And I don’t care if it is a 9-0 decision, they can’t change that and they won’t change that. And if they come out with a decision that is contrary to God’s natural created order, I personally will advocate disobedience to it … and collectively, we cannot accept that as the rule of law.”

“You also have to be ready to pay the consequences,” Staver continued, “because the civil government wrath is going to be poured out on you. But as a believer, you cannot obey something that is contrary to God’s law. And we would easily say, well, what would happen if the government forced you turn over a Jew in Nazi Germany? All of us would say we wouldn’t do that, we wouldn’t listen to that. Well, we’re about ready to walk into the moment.”

No you’re not. Hiding Jews from the Nazis was an act to protect human rights. Refusing to let gay people get married is an act to continue violating them. Not even remotely the same. And I still want to know what all these bigots mean when they demand civil disobedience over same-sex marriage. What are you going to do, exactly? Stage sit-ins when total strangers get married?

I know! … I know! … He’ll refuse to turn pastors over to the GAYSTAPO who would be made to gay marry all their parishioners!

  • dingojack

Good to know that Matty is cheering on the people who are willing to actually take the consequences of not getting married to someone of their own sex, albeit from a nice safe distance.

He’s so selfless, he’s not even there*!

Stage sit-ins when total strangers get married?

Nah, they’ll just act like a bunch of dicks in front of total strangers.

Come to think of it, it won’t be any different than today.

  • dingojack

Yeah, I’m sure picketing weddings will absolutely change hearts and minds. @@

(If this is the best they can do, they’ve sooo lost the argument).

dingojack @ # 4: … picketing weddings will absolutely change hearts and minds.

That won’t make any difference – they’ll have to lay down in the aisles!

  • dingojack

Pierce R. Butler – Well that’s easy solved, just kick ’em along.

Leave ’em rolling in the aisles.

Refuse to provide “Them” with goods and services, I reckon.

We’ll see how well that works out.

Of course, it’s only a matter of time before “They” turn out to be the bigots’ sons, daughters, nephews and nieces, and grandchildren. We’ll see how the bigotry works then.

It is rather amazing how they’ve latched onto so many denials of human rights as purported examples of what will happen if we don’t keep denying human rights. They have likened the probable SCOTUS decision allowing gays the full legal rights attendant on “marriage” to Dred Scott (where the court basically found ‘once a slave, always a slave’) or Plessy v. Ferguson (where the court found that segregation was okay as long as you could pretend it was “equal”). They have draped themselves in the mantles of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Now they are brave resistance fighters saving Christians from the crematoriums while still trying to put gays in jail or even kill them in places like Uganda and Russia.

If it didn’t have dire consequences for LGBT people, it would be hilarious.

What I expect that we will see are wingnuts protesting and attempting to disrupt gay weddings ala Westborochurch tactics. (Sorry, I had to fool my autocorrect). We who are allies may need to provide protective shields, much like people who protect the families at those funerals. Besides, I personally would love to attend a fabulous wedding or two!

Sadly, I’m sure that a significant number of the folks who buy into Staver’s shtick, had they lived in Nazi Germany, would’ve been standing out in front of houses like the cartoon parrot squawking, “Jews in here! Braaaak! Jews in here!”

  • samgardner

Well, what they’re going to do, clearly, is to bravely hide gays to keep them from the marriage demon stalking them.

I don’t know,I find it depressing how ” confused” some people are about what human rights means. I find it hard to believe they really think preventing gays from getting married is something remotely heroic.

“God made male and female, a mom and dad, husbands and wives as the first foundation of family”

Never mind the existence of gay people, let along transgender and intersex people. The problem with this “natural law” stuff is the rather narrow view of human sexuality it entails. And, even if God did create genders with the purpose of procreation, that doesn’t make procreation right, or non-procreation wrong.

By that logic, didn’t God make stuff like artificial insemination possible? So why do they condemn that as “unnatural?”

  • dan4

@12: “By that logic, didn’t God make stuff like artificial insemination possible?” They’d probably respond to that question with some stupid shit like “The Devil created artificial insemination, not God!”

Staver: And we would easily say, well, what would happen if the government forced you turn over a Jew in Nazi Germany? All of us would say we wouldn’t do that, we wouldn’t listen to that.

Staver hasn’t mastered the subjunctive, apparently.
