Rushdoony: Soft on Lesbians

Rousas John Rushdoony, the founder of Christian Reconstructionism, was a loud advocate of stoning homosexuals to death, as the Old Testament demands. But he did not, it turns out, believe that applied to lesbians. From his Institutes of Biblical Law, Volume 1, page 475:

Women aren’t even as good at sinning as men…

Except when it comes to apples, Katie.

This just points out that gay bashers consider women as less then human, probably because it’s anal sex that they consider icky and therefore unclean.

    Katie Anderson:

Women aren’t even as good at sinning as men…

I realize this framed as a wise-crack, but it’s a misleading joke. The Christian Bible argues the opposite. That one so-called sin by the supposed first human female is justification for God to command that humans practice misogyny against all females. 1 Timothy 2 (RSV):

12 I [Paul*] permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet woman will be saved through bearing children, if she continues in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.

    * 1st Timothy is generally attributed to the Apostle Paul. To a Christian whose delusions descend into “knowing” that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, this commandment is therefore coming from the grand misogynist(s?) himself, Jesus/Father/Holy Spirit.

    bcseweb.org Rushdooney:

Our list may not be perfect but it seems to cover those “crimes” against the family that are inferred by Rushdoony’s statement to Moyers. The real frightening side of it is the interpretation of heresy, apostasy and idolatry. Rushdoony’s position seems to suggest that he would have anyone killed who disagreed with his religious opinions. That represents all but a tiny minority of people. Add to that death penalties for what is quite legal, blasphemy, not getting on with parents and working on a Sunday means that it the fantasy ideal world of Rushdoony and his pals, there will be an awful lot of mass murderers and amongst a tiny population.

We have done figures for the UK which suggest that around 99% of the population would end up dead and the remainder would have each, on average, killed 500 fellow citizens.

He wanted to kill everyone. If you run the numbers, We have done figures for the UK which suggest that around 99% of the population would end up dead and the remainder would have each, on average, killed 500 fellow citizens.

Say good bye to 297 million Americans if Rushdoony’s world happens.

Fundie xians have never produced a thinker or philosopher of note. David Barton is a prolific serial liar. WL Craig is incoherent and lies a lot. Alvin Plantinga is an idiot. Pat Robertson is a dead body that his handlers occasionally reanimate. And so on.

The closest they came was Rousa Rushdoony. He might have been a brutal theocrat but he was also a psychopath and wanted to be the bloodiest mass murderer in history.

Not too many people ever took him seriously, but more do than one can imagine. They sit around at their churches and argue over just how disobedient a child has to be before you stone them to death.

There is nothing good or benign about fundie xianity. It’s the inheritors of the Catholic Inquisition and the cousins of al-Qaeda and ISIS.

I remember a quote from Tom Delay, now a Bible-beating lunatic, to the effect that everyone is physically attracted by beautiful women, and he could well imagine that that would include other women. He was quite explicit, not to say eager, about how this was not only not wrong, but natural and desirable and exciting.

But that was decades ago, when politicians drooling over hot lesbian action was OK because it was so unimaginable that gay women would ever have to be taken seriously as people or as citizens with equal rights.

raven @ # 5: …around 99% of the population would end up dead and the remainder would have each, on average, killed 500 fellow citizens.

We – you and I – went ’round and ’round on this years ago. Please recall the basic arithmetic – no matter what the absolute numbers, in such a scenario where one percent survives, each of those could have killed 99 others at maximum. (It would seem more likely that at least some of the deceased would have racked up one or more bodies before succumbing to another faithful executor of divine will, but even at the simplest scenario, you just can’t make those numbers fit together.) If survivor A and survivor B had each killed 500, that would mean 2 standing and 1,000 down, or ~99.8% dead.

  • raven

in such a scenario where one percent survives, each of those could have killed 99 others at maximum.

    1. It seems to be assumed here that only some survivors have the honor of being mass murderers. In Rushdoony’s theocracy, adult males are the rulers. Presumably the women and children only get to watch.

Women are supposed to be barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen. Not throwing rocks behind the church to kill people. Children should be taking notes so they know what their adult responsibilities as tribal killers are.

    2. This is however, the fundie xian version of Sophisticated Theology. You might want to find a fundie xian witch doctor and ask them who gets to throw the rocks and when.

    3. I’d assume that the survivors of the mass stoning murders would need and have a good throwing arm.

    4. Rushdoony didn’t make up his To Kill list. It’s straight out of the bible, Biblical Law. He was just sick enough to take it seriously.

Biblical law never actually existed. The OT bible was written by ancient versions of Jerry Falwell, Mick Huckabee, Ted Cruz, and Robert Jeffress. It’s just fantasies by mass murder wannabes.

  • Pierce R. Butler

raven @ # 11 – I have no argument with your comments here (well, maybe a little: it seems likely that some version of “biblical law” did indeed exist, in the sense of being articulated and enforced [no doubt selectively] in some limited areas and periods).

But the numbers you and bcse.web hold out just don’t hold up.

  • raven

This is a complex subject and too long for a blog comment board.

    1. The OT seems to have been written by and for the literate religious elites of Judaism. One of the themes is the struggle between polytheists and monotheists. We don’t have too good an idea what the vast majority of illiterate peasants believed.

It’s likely to have been a lot of folk religion. Archaeologists find a lot of cult statues of..Asherah, god’s wife. She was apparently a popular goddess among the common people.

    2. For most of Judean and Israeli history, they were under the law of and ruled by outsiders. The Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans. The local religious authorities simply didn’t have all that much temporal power.

    3. It’s one thing to consider pigs, nonkosher. It’s another to kill your own tribespeople all the time for minor offenses. Societies that indulge in mass internal murder simply aren’t going to last too long. The neighboring tribes, more focused on land and material stuff will just walk in and conquer.

There isn’t any evidence, historically or archaeologically, that the ancient Jews were actual bloodthirsty killers.

To be fair, the punishment for lesbianism would have been much harsher had God at the time known how much damage they do, from what I understand, to carpets and boxes.

  • cjcolucci

I know many male homophobes who don’t have a problem with lesbian women — as long as they can watch.

raven @ # 13: The OT seems to have been written by and for the literate religious elites of Judaism. … We don’t have too good an idea what the vast majority of illiterate peasants believed.

We can extrapolate quite a lot from archaeological evidence and surviving texts. To sum it up in one word: henotheism.

For most of Judean and Israeli history, they were under the law of and ruled by outsiders.

Most of whom demanded only tribute and military support, and paid no attention whatsoever to intra-tribal conflicts and feuds.

There isn’t any evidence, historically or archaeologically, that the ancient Jews were actual bloodthirsty killers.

Except for a violent and heavily militaristic body of lore, a tradition of near-ceaseless warfare all across the region, and remnants of walled cities and towns repeatedly destroyed by fire and assault.

And 500-to-1 is still not 99%.

Nonsense. You’re assuming that each person killed has only one killer. A good stoning might have a dozen or more killers. None of whom would be women, right? Are there any women here? And stop saying “Jehovah”!

  • Lofty

I assume he doesn’t want to kill all the Lesbians as they can be assigned one each to Good Christian Males for re-education. Anyway, they don’t need to enjoy it, so long as they’re producing more Good Christian Males for the Cause.

I like Frank Herbert’s theory (postulated by God Emperor Leto II in the Dune series) that the first person eating from the Tree of Knowledge was not Eve but Adam, thereby learning the feeling of shame and guilt, and how to put the blame on someone else.

  • doublereed

There’s another reason, though. It’s because women don’t have sex in the bible. Sex happens to them. Lesbianism wouldn’t even be considered sex.

I don’t even think it has anything to do with hot girl-on-girl action. It just has to do with the denial of female autonomy and the female libido.
