John Guandolo, a former FBI agent who lost his job because he had sex with a witness in a case he was investigating and reinvented himself as an “expert” on Muslims and terrorism, wants to start rounding up and punishing pretty much any Muslim group in the country. Speaking of the Muslim Brotherhood, he said:
“Well, first of all, a lot of things can happen. They are a terrorist organization so they should be designated as such. That means that you don’t have to go a layer deep or two layers deep. Once you can identify ISNA, NAIT, CAIR, the Muslim Students’ Association, the Islamic Circle of North America, the Muslim American Society, the Muslim Public Affairs Council, et al, the Islamic Society of Greater Virginia for instance, as Muslim Brotherhood organizations, then those are necessarily terrorist organizations. And not only can their leaders be charged, their property be seized, but anybody that is giving them aid and comfort can now be charged with material support of terrorism. So all of your local media, your local churches, your local politicians that show up to give aid and comfort, they can now be charged with federal terrorism charges. And that would be exciting to put some of those people in jail.”Guandolo also called on the federal government to “flex its muscle” when it comes to public colleges and universities, and withhold federal funds from states whose universities are acting as sanctuary campuses for immigrants, are “supporting Marxism” or “have jihadi organizations on their campuses.”
His argument is that the Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist organization and virtually all Muslim groups in the country have ties to them, so they should all be outlawed, and any group or individual that have any interactions with them at all should be charged with terrorism. That includes all Muslim student groups, which means that my friend Sarah, for example, an Episcopal priest who regularly plans and participates in interfaith events on the campus of Michigan State University, would be charged with aiding and abetting terrorism. And that’s fucking nuts.
Guandolo is one of those far-right bigots who uses the 50 degrees of separation test to determine who is and is not a Muslim terrorist. If you had lunch at a Middle Eastern restaurant where the second cousin of someone who once made a trip to Pakistan, that’s all it takes to brand you a terrorist sympathizer, if not an actual terrorist. I’m sure glad Islamophobia is a myth, though, aren’t you? I’m glad it doesn’t actually exist, as so many bigots tell us, because if it did, it would look a lot like this.
