Jefferson Davis Elementary School in Jackson, Mississippi is going to be renamed. Starting next year, instead of being named for the Confederate leader and slave owner, it will be the Barack Obama Elementary School. That sound you hear is racist heads exploding all over Mississippi.
A Mississippi elementary school will change its name to honor former President Barack Obama instead of its original namesake, Confederate President Jefferson Davis…
“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,” Jefferson said in a statement, according to the Clarion Ledger, a local paper. The school’s new name will now “reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves,” she added.
As a general rule, I don’t favor naming schools after politicians, especially ones who are still alive. But I’m still going to enjoy drinking the tears of racist jackasses who will lose their damn minds over this. Unfortunately, I suspect that will also come with threats to the school at some point. And what a sad commentary that I don’t consider that to be a risky prediction in our current political climate.
