Two more women in Alabama have come forward to accuse Roy Moore of sexual misconduct, one of grabbing her butt while she was in his office to sign some papers and another who said he asked her out when she was 17 and told her he dates young girls all the time.
In 1982, Kelly Harrison Thorp was working as a hostess at the Red Lobster restaurant in Gadsden. She was 17 years old and a high school senior. One day Roy Moore came into the restaurant, and she recognized him.
“He was a public figure in this small town,” she said of Moore, who at the time was in his early 30s and the deputy district attorney for Etowah County. Later that year he would mount an unsuccessful campaign for circuit court judge.
Thorp said Moore asked her if she’d go out with him sometime.
“I just kind of said, ‘Do you know how old I am?'” she recalled.
“And he said, ‘Yeah. I go out with girls your age all the time.'”
That isn’t illegal (the age of consent in Alabama was, and is, 16), but it’s still damn creepy. And it isn’t just about the age difference. My parents are 13 years apart, but that gap is very different at different points in your life. The difference between 32 and 17 is a lot more important than if it was 42 and 27. And don’t even get me started on 14…
