Pete Hoekstra, a former Michigan congressman and an incredibly dumb human being, is now the US Ambassador to the Netherlands. And so far, he’s been nothing but an embarrassment. Faced with questions from the Dutch media about false claims he’s made about Muslims in that country, he’s lied and dodged and just hoped it would all go away.
But the Dutch journalists, not as cowed or timid as American journalists typically are, were relentless and would not just drop it. They kept asking him about it and he ended up looking like the dishonest idiot that he is and always has been. I’m so glad Trump only hires the best people, aren’t you?
Dutch journalists peppered Hoekstra with questions on unsubstantiated claims he made in 2015 about chaos that the “Islamic movement” had allegedly brought to the Netherlands.
“There are cars being burned. There are politicians that are being burned,” he said then, at a conference hosted by a conservative group. “And yes, there are no-go zones in the Netherlands.”
The comments have widely been described as inaccurate, and seem to reflect certain conspiracy theories about sharia law that crop up in some circles of the far-right in the West. When pressed by the Dutch reporters, Hoekstra declined to retract the comments or give specific examples to back them up.
In fact, after saying that he would not be “revisiting the issue,” he simply refused to answer the question at all.
One of the other ridiculous false claims he’s made in the past is that Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton’s longtime deputy, is part of the Muslim Brotherhood and is thus a Muslim terrorist. This is a popular lie on the far right in this country but it’s been debunked over and over again. The Washington Post’s fact-checkers gave it four Pinocchios and says that the accusations “don’t pass the laugh test, even at the flimsiest standard of guilt by association.” Even John McCain has blasted these claims, saying that the accusations aimed at Abedin “have no logic, no basis and no merit. And they need to stop now.”
In short, we now have the living embodiment of the comments section at Breitbart serving as our ambassador to one of our closest allies.
