Pete Hoekstra, our staggeringly dumb Ambassador to the Netherlands (and my former congressman), has finally apologized for making a bunch of false claims about Islam and that country, lies he told a few years ago at a meeting of David Horowitz’ far-right group of Islamophobes.
Hoekstra, a former Republican congressman from Michigan and recent political appointee, made the apology during an interview Friday with De Telegraaf, one of the largest Dutch newspapers, at the end of a particularly rough introduction for the new ambassador.
“Looking back, I am shocked I said that,” he told the newspaper. “It was a wrong statement. It was wrong.”…In the interview with the Dutch newspaper, Hoekstra said that he couldn’t recall what his remark was based on.
“I mixed up countries. I was wrong. I can’t recall how that could happen. I know: I was wrong,” he said.
Oh nonsense. You didn’t mix up countries. You passed on a load of B.S. from far-right cranks like Horowitz, Pam Geller and their ilk. You believed it because it fit your narrative and ran with it, repeating it to an audience that was also eager to believe it. Just like that ridiculous lie about Huma Abedin being part of the Muslim Brotherhood that you passed on. And you may claim to be shocked, but no one who has watched your mediocre political career is the least bit surprised by it.
