North Carolina Atheists to Celebrate Day of Reason at State Capitol

The Triangle Freethought Society has big plans for the National Day of Reason on Thursday, May 5th.

In response to the National Day of Prayer, the atheists will be on the grounds of the North Carolina Capitol Building in Raleigh from 11:45a – 1:15p.

And they’re bringing speakers:

Roy Speckhardt, Executive Director of the American Humanist Association

Sean Faircloth, Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America

Cecil Bothwell, atheist member of the Asheville, NC city council

Todd Stiefel, freethought activist and philanthropist

BUT WAIT! I haven’t mention the best part about this whole event.

Normally, a private Christian group holds their NDOP event on the state Capitol grounds… According to reader Amy, a member of the Triangle Freethought Society, that’s not the case this time around:

Last year we got the idea to try to reserve it before they could, and it worked! No word if they will be showing up to protest us (like we did them last year), but I’m so thrilled we pre-empted them. Also, we have it reserved for 2012 as well. :)

How awesome is that. More information on the event can be found here. Attend! Let’s make sure the media doesn’t say the NDOR event was “sparsely attended.” Plus, it sounds like you’ll be around some pretty awesome atheists that afternoon.

It sounds pretty petty to be undercutting their reservations, but whatever pisses them off is good. Hopefully they’ll show up mad and make complete asses of themselves.

I wish I knew about this earlier.
Maybe I can still make it.

I don’t think it’s petty in the least – they had a right to it, as any group, presumably; good for them if they got there first!

  • Amy

If anything we have more of a right to be there because we are promoting a secular day of reason, rather than a government-sponsored (yet unconstitutional) day of Christian prayer.

Aw, crap, I have plans Thursday. I never hear about these things in time.

Ah, well, maybe I’ll make the evening stuff.

I know how you feel, Just Al. I have plans for Thursday, too. I always hear about these things a bit too late to make plans for it.

Just Al and benji, in addition to the triangle freethought society there are two local atheist groups active on meetup.com, if you join either one (or both) you’ll hear about all this stuff. Unfortunately I have to work tomorrow so I won’t be able to make it.

I absolutely have to work tomorrow but wish I could be there! Give ‘em hell reason!
