I am age 78, once a Catholic priest for five years (in the 1960's), then a math teacher for 44 years up to the present day. I became an atheist a few years ago. My hobbies are music and chess.
Edward! There must be two of you doing all this amazing, productive stuff! I’m feeling a bit lazy…
Thank you. Thank you for making me realize that I am not alone.
Edward, you are, ahem, an inspiration!
i need to do this, darnit. i like to think i’m pretty good, with argumentative presentation and writing.
the one thing i would add to this presentation would be that the study of history consistently shows that people who espouse religion are greedy, violent, often politically motivated and lazy.
not all believers, but many, many of their leaders. it’s a racket. “i want to control your women, eat food you grew and i didn’t, and live in a palace filled with nice things, where you don’t live. give me your money and do what i say.”
that’s what really sealed it for me. i because an atheist because i hate hypocrisy, and lies. which is mostly what religions are made of.
“the one thing i would add to this presentation would be that the study of history consistently shows that people who espouse religion are greedy, violent, often politically motivated and lazy.”
I’m not so sure that religion is the cause here. I would hypothesize that it is rather more likely that only powerful people are likely to be historically significant. Powerful people, if left unchecked, are more likely to be “greedy, violent, and often politically motivated” people. They happen to also be religious because until recently, there wasn’t any other philosophical option. Religion is falling down today because science offers much more compelling explanations for the world than does religious belief. I will grant you that there are other ways of becoming famous than being horrible, but it is one of the easier options.
OTOH, I often wonder how many of those who most fervently espouse religious belief do so genuinely vs. see it as a powerful tool to rally people around a particular cause.
Just wonderful, Edward. As has been said already, you are an inspiration! You are able to verbalize so eloquently thoughts that many of us are thinking. It really is a joy to watch.
Edward Tarte, you fucking rock!
heh, no meaning of life there. Nope. None at all. no siree bob.
Really, I have put this in my bookmarks for linking the next time I get the “atheists are hollow shells” line.
Mr. Tarte, I love your videos! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowlege with all of us…You’re delightful!
