Lucy Kaplansky Sings ‘This Morning I Am Born Again’

Singer Lucy Kaplansky just released a video cover of Woody Guthrie‘s song “This Morning I Am Born Again.” If you’ve never heard the song before, the lyrics are all about how he’s “born again” without any sense of religion:

This morning I was born again and a light shines on my land
I no longer look for heaven in your deathly distant land
I do not want your pearly gates don’t want your streets of gold
This morning I was born again and a light shines on my soul

Beautiful song and a great rendition.

Hmmm. Without listening to the song, the lyrics seem to match the melody to “Ghost Riders in the Sky.” Or, if you prefer, “Ghost Chickens in the Sky.” Strange.

Wow! I’ve always loved Woody’s songs and his songs never fail to surprise me when I hear a NEW-TO-ME one. Not surprising sinse he wrote hundred of songs. Such simple words yet ring so tragically revealing of his intensely short lived life. Thank you Rocky for the link and Hemant for the post.

Mediocre artists borrow – good ones steal…

Lucy Kaplansky opened for Cosy Sheridan in Tucson a long while back; both marvelous live performers and songwriters…and interpreters.
    Thanks for this one, Hemant.

Lyrics by Woody Guthrie, music by Slaid Cleaves. Harmony by Buddy Miller.

Interesting…Buddy Miller is a Christian musician, although he did write one of the very few Christian songs I like (All My Tears, in the kick-ass version done with Steve Earle).

All folk songs sound the same. Look up “Man Of Constant Sorrow”. They all sound like the same damn song.
