The CIA Is Becoming More White, Male, and Christian, and That’s Bad for America

We have yet another example of our government promoting Christianity, and the consequences go far beyond social issues.

According to Jenna McLaughlin, an intelligence reporter for Foreign Policy, the CIA is turning away from its commitment to diversity under the leadership of Director Mike Pompeo, the Trump-appointed former Republican congressman from Kansas. That means recruiting fewer employees who are openly LGBTQ, women, or people of color. That, in turn, means having fewer perspectives at the table, which you’d think would be a problem for an agency dedicated to intelligence.

Some conservatives just write that off as a desire to be politically correct instead of looking for the best people for the job, but those two ideas aren’t mutually exclusive. If you’re not looking for talent everywhere, or doing everything you can to make people from all walks of life want to work for you, you’re going to miss out on hiring and maintaining the best people.

Pompeo, the article notes, has spoken out against marriage equality, doesn’t bother going to diversity events, and promotes his religion through his position as CIA Director.

Pompeo, an evangelical Christian, has said previously that Islamist terrorists will “continue to press against us until we make sure that we pray and stand and fight and make sure that we know that Jesus Christ is our savior is truly the only solution for our world.”

According to four sources familiar with the matter, Pompeo, who attends weekly Bible studies held in government buildings, referenced God and Christianity repeatedly in his first all-hands speech and in a recent trip report while traveling overseas. According to a profile by the Washington Post’s Greg Miller, Pompeo is working on starting a chaplaincy for the CIA campus like the military has.

The CIA did not dispute these events. “Director Pompeo is a man of faith,” the spokesperson said. “The idea that he should not practice his faith because he is Director of CIA is absurd.”

And the idea that anyone is trying to prevent Pompeo from practicing his faith is also absurd. What people are frustrated with is how he’s turning the CIA into his personal church. It puts pressure on everyone to conform or be ostracized, whether Pompeo believes that or not.

By the way, terrorists are also “people of faith.” Alienating those who could offer insights into their way of thinking — and the ability to speak fluent Arabic — is counterproductive to the CIA’s own goals. You’re not going to get many of those people working for the CIA when the boss actively promotes Jesus at meetings.

Mikey Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation says that a number of his clients are afraid to speak out despite their concerns, comparing the current CIA situation to something “straight out of The Handmaid’s Tale.”
