Taking a Stand for Jesus

A sign welcoming visitors to Harris County, Georgia, is seen in an undated handout picture courtesy of Sheriff Mike Jolley

By now, most readers of the atheist channel here at Patheos are aware of the Harris County, Georgia sheriff who took a public stand against “political correctness” by buying and posting a sign which makes it clear that in his opinion, if you are not his flavor of Christian or willing to pretend to be, then you simply aren’t welcome in his county.  This sign was paid for by him but affixed to the public property at his sheriff’s office. This is problematic for many reasons which have been very wel … [Read more...]

The Atheist War on Thanksgiving

holiday mix

(via Facebook open source)Did you hear about the atheist war on Thanksgiving?Yeah, me either. As far as I know, there is no atheist war on Thanksgiving and since the mythological War on Christmas hysteria started well before Halloween this year, it's a wonder anyone even thinks about Thanksgiving, except as an excuse to do some major belt busting. However, today I was asked why someone like me, an atheist, even bothers celebrating Thanksgiving due to not having someone to “thank”. I … [Read more...]

Musings on ‘Murica and the nature of cruelty.

(Image via mercycorps.org)When did we become so cruel? When did we become the kind of country where rejection of our own core values is okay? Where the words “bring us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses” are meaningless and where we only want you if you are not tired, you are not poor, you work in the tech or medical industries, and you are Christian? How did we become a country where a top presidential candidate can seriously suggest a registration system for certain classes of … [Read more...]

Speaking FRANK-ly about Jesus – Part 2

jesus in the storm

Frank Zindler’s blog dedicated to the thesis that Jesus of Nazareth never existedAs we await the appearance of René Salm’s NazarethGate: Quack Archeology, Holy Hoaxes, and the Invented Town of Jesus, I think it is useful to summarize the status of the Nazareth problem as it stood at the time René began to work on his first book, The Myth of Nazareth: The Invented Town of Jesus. Salm was not the first to question the historical existence of Nazareth at the turn of the era when Jesus and the Ho … [Read more...]

Atheists oppose vaccines?

Obviously Ben Carson has a problem with science and scientific thinking in spite of his professional record as a notable surgeon. For example, much fuss was made last week about a younger Ben Carson’s statement that the Egyptian pyramids were used as grain storage silos, not tombs as determined through scientific investigation. This is not a surprising development, however, as Ben Carson has made it clear his version of his Christian faith, however wrongheaded and misguided, features prominently … [Read more...]

Speaking FRANK-ly about Jesus

by Frank ZindlerFrank Zindler’s blog posts are dedicated to the thesis that Jesus of Nazareth never existed.(via clipart.christiansunite.com)Since the publication of my book The Jesus the Jews Never Knew back in 2003, I have been regarded as one of perhaps a half-dozen highly visible advocates of the theory that Jesus of Nazareth never existed as an historical figure. (I use the word ‘theory’ in the accepted sense of ‘an hypothesis that has successfully passed many tests.’) Since … [Read more...]

Victory for online harassers.

south by southwest logo

(Photo: SXSW)In a moment of supreme irony, the South by Southwest Festival has apparently cancelled panels intended to talk about online harassment due to online harassment. In doing so, the organizers made a public statement in which they stated this: “However, preserving the sanctity of the big tent at SXSW Interactive necessitates that we keep the dialogue civil and respectful. If people can not agree, disagree and embrace new ways of thinking in a safe and secure place that is free of o … [Read more...]

Early review of Fighting God: An Atheist Manifesto for a Religious World

Preview Review (“Pre-review”?) of Dave Silverman’s BookBy Ed BucknerI’m delighted that I now have my own copy (signed!) of That Pretty Good Guy Who Gets Called a Dick So Often He Gets Angry and Writes A Book About It—better known as Fighting God: An Atheist Manifesto for a Religious World  by David Silverman. It’s worth adding, just from personal knowledge: he's really not a “Pretty Good Guy”—he’s a damned good guy. I’m enjoying the book—an “Advance Uncorrected Proof” copy—immensely (I ha … [Read more...]

More Texas prayer warriors for Jesus

Members and supporters of an organization called Concerned Christian Citizens of Central Texas recently gathered outside the Killeen ISD school board to protest a complaint lodged earlier by the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF).  According to an article in the Killeen Daily Herald on August 30, 2015, the FFRF filed their complaint against the Killeen ISD board for their unconstitutional practice of opening their board meetings with a prayer. The Concerned Citizens subsequently delivered … [Read more...]
