Quoting Quiverfull: Suffering Suffering?

From the new book by Tim Keller that John Piper of Desiring God and pals are promoting – Walking Through Pain and Suffering

“Some suffering is given in order to chastise and correct a person for wrongful patterns of life (as in the case of Jonah imperiled by the storm), some suffering is given not to correct past wrongs but to prevent future ones (as in the case of Joseph sold into slavery), and some suffering has no purpose other than to lead a person to love God more ardently for himself alone and so discover the ultimate peace and freedom.”

Theologians. They have too much time on their hands. I guess finding reasons for everyone’s sufferings makes them feel less compassion, because this compassion might drive them to actually try to relieve someone’s suffering. Now.. what a waste of a bright theologian’s time!

    This is very insulting.

Isn’t that a wonderful theology! “God” makes you suffer so you love him more. Abusive relationship, anyone?

IF that was true, it would have been abusive. But who God is and what some theologians say is not always the same thing.

In addition to the points raised above, I don’t understand why does Mr. Keller write as though he’s stating established fact “Some suffering is given…. some suffering has no purpose but…”

How does he think he knows this? He seems to have just made it up. I admit I see this a great deal in this sub-culture. Take a premise and head off to the races. Proof, evidence, logic, that stuff is needed by other people.
