10 Reasons Calvinism Was Attractive to Me

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundI grew up evangelical, but became a Calvinist when I was 16, and eventually started attending the Reformed Baptist church. Here’s a 10 reasons I was attracted to Calvinism.1. It made more sense from a fundamental, literal interpretation of the Bible. The Bible says, “and all those who were appointed to eternal life believed.” What else could this mean other than some were appointed and others not?2. Calvinism took fear out of hell. Calvinism says that if you desire Christ, then you are of the elect. You don’t have to sweat and pray the sinners prayer over and over. If you have desire, you're in. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: You Better Be Bowing and Scraping?

by Steven Anderson from Faithful Word Baptist Church - Appreciating Your SpouseEditor's note: To be completely fair here Anderson did mention one short paragraph about how a husband should be appreciative over a wife. But then he spent the next three paragraphs telling a wife how she is to esteem her husband. Seems a bit lopsided doesn't it. Are we really expected to make a fuss over a man doing something that is his responsibility in the first place? The sexism is rampant. Having a penis does not exempt you from doing your share of running the household and you shouldn't have to be petted and thanked every single time you manage to load the dishwasher! Ladies, when your husband lands … [Read more...]

Bonus Quoting Quiverfull: Is This Appropriate – Republican National Convention Edition?

Uttered by Pastor Mark Burns last night at the Republican National Convention:Editor's note: We've watched the Evangelicals and others on the extreme right of Christianity go from candidate to candidate and proclaim them as 'God's Choice' It seems now that most are supporting the candidacy of Donald Trump, a man that couldn't even pick out a real Bible verse as his favorite, claiming that God picked Trump. Last night this is the prayer that opened the convention and it stands out as one of the most bizarre ever spoken at a political convention. Your thoughts? … [Read more...]

Why I Hate Jesus

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserI don’t hate the flesh and blood Jesus who walked the dusty roads of Palestine, nor do I hate the Jesus found in the pages of the Bible. These Jesuses are relics of the past. I’ll leave it to historians to argue and debate whether these Jesuses were real or fiction. Over the centuries, Christians have created many Jesuses in their own image. This is the essence of Christianity, an ever-evolving religion bearing little resemblance to what it was even a century ago. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Submission Shows Respect?

by Kim Cash Tate from John Piper's Desiring God - Let the Bible Tell You How to be a WomanEditor's note: This entire piece seems to me to be a gentle albeit sort of sneaky way to insist that women submit to men because Bible. What do you think? … [Read more...]

Examining ATI Wisdom Booklets: Booklet 1 – Science Portion – How Eyes Work

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideEditor's note: We all know that Mel is smart, educated and very analytical so it seems she is possibly the best choice as a science teacher to break down what the ATI Wisdom Booklets have wrong. Particularly in light of the fact that many Quiverfull families use the booklets as the only homeschool curriculum to teach their children. All images from Mel's blog.Due to the size of the posting and the many images this post is broken into pages. Please click Continue to go to the next page. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Be Frugal or God Will Take Away Your Money?

by Lori Alexander from Always Learning - Living FrugallyEditor's note: Lori's talking about how being frugal is godly, and while I think personally it's a good idea to live within your means and try to put a little aside each month it's not always that simple. Plus, in the parts of this post I skipped Ms. Alexander is making out that modern society is so extravagant that we're just one Roman orgy of consumerism from a Mount Vesuvius of debt. It's hard to make yourself save and be frugal when incentives like interest rates are so low. Does how you handle your money have any bearing on how 'Godly' you are? Money does have power, and it's been my observation that those in church with money … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Steven Anderson Encourages People to Wear Homophobic T-Shirts?

by Steven Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church - 3 Reasons to Attend the Red Hot Preaching ConferenceEditor's note: This is from a piece Anderson wrote to try and drum up attendance for at conference  at their sister church Verity Baptist. Verity is the church that is being evicted from their rental facilities because of their pastor, Roger Jimenez, for his own equally disgusting words in the wake of the Pulse nightclub terror attack. These are the same guys calling for the execution of all LGBT people. I suspect there will indeed be protests. While the actual conference is being held at the church, there have been rooms put aside at the local Hilton Garden Inn in Sacramento, … [Read more...]

What are you Doing?: Chapter 8 Part 2 – Sakal Just Wants to be Right (and Sort of Gross)

by Suzanne TitkemeyerLet us recap this long chapter of mouths and words tussling between buttinski park stalker Sakal Davidson and youth pastor pinata Charles Williamson. The entire chapter so far has been about arguing about what makes up dating  or courtship and what is actually 'Biblical' with a little 'Daddy controls everyone!' thrown in for good measure. I got five solid pages in before bailing last week. This week covers the next four pages. … [Read more...]
