Quoting Quiverfull: Jana Duggar Still Waiting For ‘Prince Charming’?

by Jana Duggar in an interview with Crown of Beauty Magazine - New Duggar Girls InterviewEditor's note: Jana finally speaks out about the struggles of waiting for marriage when all your siblings are marrying off left and right. This is so sad. We all know that it's very common for the eldest daughter in large Quiverfull families to either not marry at all, or to delay marriage much later than their siblings so that they can be a help meet for their younger siblings. Is anyone interested in doing a book review for NLQ of Crown of Beauty's book 'Beauty, Boys, and Ballgowns'? Let me know and I'll see if I can get a review copy. … [Read more...]

Wishful Thinking and Jello

by Cindy Kunsman cross posted from her blog Under Much GraceImages by Cindy Kunsman from Under Much Grace and used with permission. This is another article in the Cindy's Cognitive Biases series. I remember when I was head over heels (sometimes literally) in that Toronto Blessing Movement in Word of Faith, I could feel the disappointment coming. I was probably about ten pounds overweight at the time, and I went on an extended fast. I stopped checking my weight when I was three weeks in, and I'd dropped about 35 pounds. I continued to fast until I “believed” I'd achieved what I'd set out to overcome, but I didn't weigh myself again. I do remember when my weight shot about 35 pounds ahead … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Guard Your Children’s Friends?

by Nancy Campbell from Above Rubies - Guard Your Children's FriendsEditor's note: Nancy explains her reasons for isolating children as much as possible from 'The World' because they might be influenced to sin. Hmm, let's see - Nancy loves to claim that God is super-mighty and if you raise your children right they will stay on the right path. Then she turns around and says you have to isolate those same kids so that they do not sin. … [Read more...]

Questioning the Pearls – How Do I Handle an Angry Child?

For well over a year we’ve been running a second Answering ‘Preparing To Be A Help Meet’ on Sundays, filled with questions by young ladies trying to get ready for marriage. Since we’ve run through many of the questions on their site it’s time to shift Sundays to something else, like perhaps examining the cornucopia of probably fake emails and questions that Michael and Debi Pearl of No Greater Joy post on their website and the possibly poisonous answers they give. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Silencing Sexually Abused People in the Church?

by Tim Bayly from Bayly Blog - Sexual Abuse: Church Coverups Don't Justify Witch HuntsEditor's note: One of the more sick and twisted things to come from the writings of pastor Tim Bayly. One part making ridiculous claims about women, one part 'Just shut up about sexual abuse' silencing, and one part revisionist history. The church has already proven that in this issue they cannot be trusted to do the right thing. Too many times sexual abuse by those in power at the church has been swept under the rug and the victim blamed. As long as this is the way church leadership handles sexual abuse the media and websites need to call for reform. … [Read more...]

Banning Movies – Parody That Sounds Too Real

There's of a lot of films out right now that are upsetting the Evangelical Quiverfull world right now, from 'The Shack' with it's depiction of God as a LGBQT black woman to 'Beauty and the Beast' and it's brief depiction of a gay Lefou. They are ignoring the disturbing themes of kidnapping and holding someone against their will, Stockholm Syndrome and the vaguely bestiality theme of a girl in love with a buffalo-bear-pig being.Right now even Duggar son-in-law Ben Seewald is ranting in long videos about the evils of 'The Shack'. This is sort of a parody of that. The Try Guys of Buzz Feed, whom I usually love and adore, decided to poke fun at the religious right's banning of all sorts … [Read more...]

Love Does Not Look Like Judgement

by Living Liminal cross posted from her blog Living LiminalI've been thinking since I wrote my last post about our use of the phrase "Love the sinner, hate the sin." In that post I was suggesting that going out of your way to point out and denounce whatever you view as sin in the lives of others, under the guise of "love", is not in fact a very loving thing to so.I've struggled with the notion that people who claim to worship a God whose very essence is love, can be some of the most hurtful, hateful, unloving people around. And that in so many cases, christians are not known for their love, but for their bigotry and fear and condemnation of others. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Women Want to be Men?

by Lori Alexander from The Transformed Wife - A Day Without Women in the Workplace Something to CelebrateEditor's note: This has been a very strange week over on Ms. Alexander's blog. There are a ton of new posting I'm not going to quote for NLQ namely because they are almost nonsensical word salads that are hard to parse. What are we missing? Lori having a fit about the new 'Beauty and the Beast' movie because of the rumored 'homosexuality theme'. Apparently she's unbothered by the kidnapping, Stockholm Syndrome and themes of bestiality in the film, just one whiff of gayness. Other rants this week included quoting verbatim Matt Walsh's whining about women's rights, republishing whole … [Read more...]

The Power of the Transformed Wife – Slutty, Slutty Yoga Pants

by Suzanne TitkemeyerLucky chapter 13 today on a Friday. The title is 'How Are You Dressing?' and it's all about modesty. A pile of shaming and blaming and defrauding, oh my! Tighten up your yoga pants.Thankfully this is a very short chapter, even if it's rather disjointed and filled with shaming. The author starts off by discussing what others and other churches believe about what a Godly woman should wear. Alright, I'll give her bonus points for at least acknowledging that there are differences in what people believe is appropriate. She says that many take their advice from the Old Testament, but that is wrong too because we're no longer obligated to follow anything in the … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Ken Alexander Mansplains Submission?

by Ken Alexander of The Transformed Wife - Does Submitting to Husbands in Everything Mean Everything? Editor's note: Sounds like Ken is deliberately walking back the recent comments by Dave that claim submission means you also have to do things requested of you by your husband that are immoral or illegal. Wondering if Lori got in trouble with Ken over the recent obscene abusive direction of the discussions on her blog. … [Read more...]
