The Smell Test: 5 Signs of a Toxic Church

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Samanthapfield.comThis weekend we drove past a billboard advertising a “Christian Center” with one of those buzzword names, like Thirst or Resurgence or Ember or Pathway or Crossover (and, suddenly, these are also names for cars). I didn’t know what a “Christian Center” could be, so I looked it up thinking maybe it was like a Christian-themed recplex or something. Turns out it was a church, with trendy, mobile-responsive design, but the copy for the website was so bad it cracked me up. I started reading portions out loud to Handsome, but one phrase (“mode of dress”) pulled me up in my tracks. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 2 – Polygamy and the ‘Biblical’ Man?

by Vaughn Ohlman from Let Them Marry and The Practical Theonomist - Is Polygamy Forbidden in Scripture?Editor's note: We're still on our magical mystery tour of Mr. Ohlman's crap. Von continues to lock horns with some other 'good patriarch' over the issue of polygamy, putting himself in the pro-polygamy camp. His opponent's remarks are bolded and italicized, Von's are in plain text. … [Read more...]

NLQ Question of the Week: Why Keep Reinventing the Gospel and Faith?

This is a new series we have started running on Thursdays. Examining some of the questions involving long held Quiverfull theology and life.Last week's imbroglio with Vaughn Ohlman and his Get Them Married retreat brings up the question in the title. As we get further away from the original origins of the Christian faith it seems like every under educated Tom, Dick and Harry think that they are a … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 1 – Polygamy and the ‘Biblical’ Man?

by Vaughn Ohlman of The Practical Theonomist and Let Them Marry - Is Polygamy Forbidden in the Scripture?Editor's note: While Mr. Ohlman is rushing around doing damage control and erasing/rewriting large swaths of Let Them Marry so that it doesn't make him sound quite as creepy as "Game of Thrones" Craster he's completely neglected the many other blogs he's written on. Many of the same thoughts and toxic rules for marrying are on all the other sites. Here's a bit about polygamy where Von is trying to debate someone else. The person he is debating remarks are in bolded italics, Von's are in plain text. … [Read more...]

Not Quoting Quiverfull: Teaching Girls It’s Okay To Be Angry

by Soraya Chemaly from Role Reboot - Does Your Daughter Know It's OK To Be Angry?Editor's note: What do you think about this? Is teaching our daughters to own their feelings something we need to do more of? Especially when coming out of fundamentalist cult religions anger can be a scary unpleasant thing. Food for thought this Thursday morn. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 2 – Making Your Child Less Fearful by Punishment?

by Michael Pearl of No Greater Joy - Fear of BeesEditor's note: So Mike and I have the same advice regarding teaching the child about bees to lessen their fears and he doesn't automatically go to switching the child to make them stay in the bed. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day by accident. But how is making the child sleep in a very uncomfortable place, like the laundry room or bathtub not some sort of punishment? What would you do instead when the child is too afraid to sleep in her room? … [Read more...]

Answering ‘Preparing To Be A Help Meet’ – Child Training?

Another installment of giving better answers to the questions asked at Debi Pearl’s site message board for the book ‘Preparing To Be A Help Meet’. Many young ladies ask questions on all sorts of different subjects brought up by the book. There was just one big problem, many of the answers stray into either the outright bad and emotionally unhealthy to dangerous. Yes, typical Debi Pearl borderline abusive. Here’s what we’re going to be doing here at NLQ. Every week, once or twice a week, I’ll be posting up one of the questions from the message board and ask you, our readers, to answer that poor soul’s question in a way that is logical,  rational and the best possible solution, in other words 1 … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 1 – Making Your Child Less Fearful By Punishment?

by Michael Pearl from No Greater Joy - Fear of BeesEditor's note: Apologies for using the Pearls yet again. Yesterday I ran across this letter and response and was too horrified by Pearl's advice not to share it immediately. Poor children in Pearl World are apparently not allowed nightmares or irrational fears and yes, one of the solutions Michael uses is to go for the switch. Poor poor kids! No one works themselves up to 'get attention' because they are afraid of something. … [Read more...]

If Salvation is by Grace and Not by Works

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserI recently wrote a post about Evangelical outrage over Montel Williams suggesting that the heart of Christianity is good works. Countless Evangelicals schooled Williams about salvation, reminding him that good works play no part in salvation. According to these Evangelicals, salvation is by grace — God bestowing his unmerited favor upon sinners. Are these Evangelicals right? It depends on which Bible verses you read. For example, Ephesians 2:8,9 says: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast. Seems to the … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 4 – Public School is Evil, But You Are More Evil For Not Obeying?

by Debi Pearl from No Greater joy – Rising to the ChallengeEditor's note: Thankfully this is the last bit of this grand exercise in cognitive dissonance. Which boils down to submit more and become a better wife. As always it's blame the mothers. … [Read more...]
