Part 1 – Black and White Thinking After Exiting: Adventures in Ambiguity

by Cindy Kunsman cross posted from her blog Under Much GraceI spent much time studying chemistry, thinking about the Bohr Model of the Atom, and I was so fascinated by the periodic table.  I suppose that along with math, it seemed like one of the few consistent things in my life.  Language could be misinterpreted, but chemistry presented a fixed, definitive type of truth.  And I lacked that in my life. How can something be true and untrue at the same time? … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 2 – Michael Pearl Defending His Strawman?

by Michael Pearl from No Greater Joy – Spank and Save a ChildEditor's note: This story of the screaming psychologist that slaps her children is one that pops up from time to time in Pearl's rhetoric whenever he has to point out that someone is spanking wrong or hitting the wrong way. Is there ever really a correct way to hit others? Studies seem to indicate that if you use any physical violence on your children you are teaching them that violence is an acceptable way to settle conflict. … [Read more...]

News: Duggars Hide Flight Plans for Their Airplane

One of the more curious pieces of news on TLC's Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar family is the recent change to their publicly available flight information. In the last few days the Flight Aware flight plan page for the newer Duggar-owned plane - the 2004 SR22 with the FAA registry number N68SY - has gone completely private. Looks like Jim Bob finally ponied up the extra dollars to make all the flight plans for the plane unavailable to anyone with Google and the easy to obtain information on their plane. … [Read more...]

Bonding and Bondage in Abusive Relationships

by Virginia Knowles cross posted from her blog Watch the ShepherdIn case you're wondering why you can't "just get over it" from a painfully abusive or damaging or destructive relationship: Trauma bonding makes any relationship harder to end, harder to heal, harder to find freedom from through forgiveness, than the loss of a true love. The neural pathways burned into a brain in trauma bonding are laid down in powerful fear/anxiety hormonal rushes leaving even comparatively good memories with the person colored with the stains of those traumatic events. The loss of anyone we have loved -- whether they have treated us very well indeed or in a deplorable manner -- is something that will heal … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 1 – Michael Pearl Defending His Strawman?

by Michael Pearl from No Greater Joy - Spank and Save a ChildEditor's note: Michael manages to beat all his favorite dead horses in this: television, public school, liberals, global warming, environmentalists, animal rights people, gays, communists and fascists. Sometimes he manages to come across like some strange isolationist who has time-traveled back from the early 1950s to warn about the 'Red Scare'. Since he loves to claim that his critics misquote him we like to quote every single word of his misogynistic rantings and let the readers decide they are actually about. … [Read more...]

NLQ Question of the Week: Why Do They Think They Literally Own Their Children?

This is a new series we have started running on Thursdays. Examining some of the questions involving long held Quiverfull theology and life.So many times in the writings of Michael Pearl, Nancy Campbell and many others in both Evangelicalism and Quiverfull there are references made to parents literally owning their children in much the same way as you might own a car or a kitchen appliance. Why do you think it is that they reduce their children to physical possessions instead of treating them as fully human? … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Anti-Spanking Parents Are Anti-Family?

by Michael Pearl from No Greater Joy - Spank and Save a Child (written and published in 2010 when the Pearls were heavily in the media over the deaths of children by parents that followed the advice in their book 'To Train Up A Child')Editor's note: No, Michael, people that do not spank their children and who send those children to public schools are not automatically 'Socialists' It's not a 'mind control scheme' or any attempt to further a 'world view' and it's certainly not anti-family. Parents are always free to pass on their religious faith to their children in this nation and to say otherwise is simply paranoid. … [Read more...]

News: Legal Charges Being Brought Against Michael and Debi Pearl?

Christianity Today published a story about the long Facebook posting Debi Pearl published in December calling for the deaths of those that oppose them. Remember that seemingly mentally unbalanced screed? The article on CT does not mention who is filing a law suit against them, what the charges may be or any concrete details, just that it is happening finally. From Christianity Today: U.S. Evangelical Couple Linked to Child Abuse Ask God to 'Strike Our Enemies Dead' … [Read more...]

The Famous Ones

by Ellen cross posted from her blog When Church HurtsThere are big names out there in the spiritual abuse world.  Big name perpetrators.  Big name authors of blogs and books and Twitter feeds.  Big names whose social media accounts explode regularly over big names.  Big names getting the word out about big names who have committed outrageous acts of abuse.  And, of course, any time those outrageous acts are committed with any hint of ties to churchianity, we recognize them as not just sexual or domestic or physical abuse, but as spiritual abuse. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Long Engagements Product Impure People?

by Adam Gregorian at - How Long Should I Be Engaged?Editor's note: You remember this guy? He's the one that had the website Is This Modest? where he had loads of photos of scantily clad teenagers with a lot of tut-tutting over their immodestly in a very creepy and inappropriate way? He's still blogging but at now. The great irony of his blogging, besides claiming that long engagements lead to sexual sins are what has happened to his Is This site. It's been hacked and taken over by radical Islamists.  Which is way funnier and ironic than anything else that could have been done with his site. … [Read more...]
