News: World Magazine Answers Critics & Disseminates Absolutely Nothing

ng l

by Suzanne TitkemeyerToday World Magazine posted about the internet wide discussions involving their article on homeschooling and child abuse - Homeschool Debate: How To Keep A Few Bad Apples From Spoiling The Bushel. You remember this article, right? This is the same piece that took something our SASBN member Heather Doney said out of context to change the meaning somewhat and also the article where HSLDA was allowed to get away with claiming only a few were homeschooling to hide child abuse and those few were 'fake homeschoolers'The article was the usual white-washed denial of a problem that typically seems to occur in Christian Fundamentalist Evangelical circles. Circle the … [Read more...]

by Adeye from her blog No Greater Joy Mom - here we are, Lord--send us! as seen on Facebook shared by NLQ Founder Vyckie GarrisonRemarks in italics are from the blog. The others are Vyckie's commentary. "I long to give my life away--every part of me. I want to be so empty on earth and so full of the things of heaven." -- says Quiverfull mom of 9 (6 with disabilities), whom "the Father has chosen" to adopt 4 frozen embryos ... "Twin boys born from the same batch of embryos both have profound special needs."As I frequently say: If you don't mind ending up dead, or wishing you were dead, go ahead and give Christ-like martyrdom a try. … [Read more...]

Hearing Homeschool Moms’ Thoughts on Faith & Education

hearing

by Heather Doney cross posted from her blog Becoming WorldlySometimes (thankfully more rarely than I expected) I get yelled at on my blog by homeschooling parents. Other times I get absolutely wonderful messages. Lately I’ve had some amazing ones and a couple quasi-nasty ones, and some that may or may not have had me reaching for the tissues because I’d suddenly gotten something in my eye.I’ve realized that the crossroads of faith and education is a particularly fraught space. Well, I’ve actually known this for some time. I used to try to steer clear of it because it was triggering to me, but now I see that it needs to be discussed. It’s a powerful intersection, a space buzzing with a … [Read more...]

Misquoting Heather Doney, HSLDA’s Denials & HARO: Statement by HARO on World Magazine’s “Homeschool Debate”

Abuse and neglect in homeschooling are serious and pressing issues that need to be addressed for both the sake of children and alumni as well as the health of the homeschooling movement in general. There has been a severe lack of coverage of abuse and neglect in homeschooling by Christian news sources. We commend WORLD and Mr. Devine for shedding some ligh … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: No Rights or Choice of Your Own?

choosing

by Oswald Chambers from his book "My Utmost For His Highest"Found in the Above Rubies archive in an article 'Can God Provide? My Best Investment' used as rationalization to not use 9 years of college outside of the home. The writer sacrificed her education to be a stay at home homeschooling mother most of the time. "...if you are living the life of faith you will exercise your right to waive your rights, and let God choose for you." Is choosing to do something else after investing that much time, effort and money in your education letting God choose for you or are you choosing? … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Never Tell Others Anything ‘Not Nice’ About Your Husband?

shutyourmouth

by Erin Harrison from No Greater Joy magazine - Virtuous ConversationTalking bad about our husbands to others can spoil his reputation among the brethren. When a wife unloads to friends about how unreasonable or controlling he is, it may make her feel better for the moment, but it will spoil his good name for a long time to come. I have had two sisters in Christ continually cry to me about how horrible their husbands treated them. One wife would call me in desperation, telling me that she could not take his controlling nature any longer. She felt she was not allowed to go anywhere or do anything but serve him. It did not matter that she had talents and dreams. She was forced to set her … [Read more...]

Apostate: Thomas Aquinas Chapter 3

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundI am reading through Kevin Swanson’s latest book  Apostate: The Men Who Destroyed the Christian West. The first man on Swanson’s list is St. Thomas Aquinas. Oh, yes, according to Swanson, Aquinas is an apostate who destroyed the Christian west. In fact, St. Thomas was the foundation of our western apostasy and the decline of the Christian west. Quoting Swanson, “If the foundation was compromised, the building was doomed from the start.” I agree that St. Thomas had a huge influence on the west, but if he wants to say Thomas destroyed the Christian west, Swanson would need a load of proof. His proof? Natural Revelation. Oh, yes. … [Read more...]
