Anti-gay Christian bigots are freaking out about a new postage stamp honoring gay icon and American hero Harvey Milk.
The fundamentalist Christian organization, American Family Association, a designated hate group, is urging members not only to avoid purchasing the new stamp, but not to accept any mail postmarked with the U.S. Postal Service’s newly released Harvey Milk stamp as well.
1. Refuse to accept the Harvey Milk stamp if offered by your local post office. Instead, ask for a stamp of the United States flag.
2. Refuse to accept mail at your home or business if it is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp. Simply write ‘Return to Sender” on the envelope and tell your postman you won’t accept it.
In 1977 Harvey Milk became the first openly gay person elected to public office in California, serving just 11 months on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors before he was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone on Nov. 27, 1978.
However, in the short time he was in office, the slain civil rights hero played an instrumental role in passing a gay rights ordinance considered at the time to be the toughest in the nation.
In 2009 President Obama posthumously awarded Milk the Medal of Freedom. On May 22, in honor of Harvey Milk Day, the U.S. Postal Service released a much-anticipated series of stamps featuring the gay rights icon.
The pathetic attempt to boycott postage stamps honoring slain civil rights hero Harvey Milk is typical behavior from ignorant and frightened conservative Christians. The faithful fundamentalists continue to cling to their hatred and bigotry in a country that is slowly changing for the better, a country that is beginning to reject the false and pernicious morality of a long discredited iron age god.
