A new law that criminalizes violence against women is found to be “un-Islamic” in Pakistan.
The Women’s Protection Act, a much needed new law passed by Pakistan’s largest province of Punjab last week, gives legal protection to women suffering from domestic, psychological and sexual violence. In addition, the new legislation calls for the creation of a toll-free abuse reporting hot-line and the establishment of women’s shelters.
However, religious scholars in the country reject the law protecting women, and a powerful Pakistani religious body that advises the government on the compatibility of laws with Islam on Thursday declared the new law that criminalizes violence against women to be “un-Islamic.”
Under its constitution, Pakistan is an “Islamic Republic” with democratically elected national and provincial legislators. The Council of Islamic Ideology was created so that legislators can seek clerics’ advice before implementing legislation.
Commenting on the new law at a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday, Muhammad Khan Sherani, chairman of Pakistan’s Council of Islamic Ideology, said:
It is unacceptable.
The law seems to have the objective of pushing women out of the home, and increase their problems.
The whole law is wrong.
Fazlur Rehman, the chief of one of Pakistan’s largest religious parties, the Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam, said the law was in conflict with both Islam and the constitution of Pakistan:
This law makes a man insecure. This law is an attempt to make Pakistan a Western colony again.
It is a sad reflection on the moral character of a man when a law protecting women from violence makes him “insecure.”
And it is also a sad reflection on any religious tradition that is so pathetic that it must object to giving basic legal protection to women.
Religion of peace? No. Religion of misogyny? Apparently so.
(Note: the temptation from the regressive left will be to try to excuse this Islamic horror by saying “Oh yea, but Christianity is just as bad.” Sorry kids, Christianity is not just as bad, at least not at this time in history. Yes, both the Bible and the Quran are filled with the most vile misogyny and other horrors that should be repulsive to any reasonable person. However, at this point in time, Islam wins the misogyny contest hands down.)
