The GOP war on women intensifies.
Vice President-elect Mike Pence promises an end to safe and legal abortion.
Pence claims Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion, will be overturned because Donald Trump has been elected president.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Grand Rapids, Michigan, earlier this year, Pence declared:
We’ll see Roe vs. Wade consigned to the ash heap of history where it belongs.
Pence went on to stress the importance of electing Trump, so that the GOP presidential nominee would have the opportunity to appoint justices to the Supreme Court:
While we’re choosing a president for the next four years, this next president will make decisions that will impact our Supreme Court for the next 40.
…Go tell your neighbors and your friends, for the sake of the rule of law, for the sake of sanctity of life, for the sake of our Second Amendment, for the sake of all our other God-given liberties, we must insure the next president appointing justices to the Supreme Court is Donald Trump.
Pence is right about one thing: the next president will make decisions that will impact our Supreme Court for decades to come. And the next president will be Donald Trump.
In fact, the election of Trump could mean much more than an end to safe and legal abortion. It is no exaggeration to say that Trump’s victory could mean the ruin of the nation.Pence is also a long time and fierce opponent of abortion. A favorite of the anti-abortion, forced-birth movement, Pence began seeking to defund Planned Parenthood in 2007 and in three congressional sessions, he introduced legislation to block organizations that provide abortion services from receiving any Title X funding, even for services not related to reproductive health or family planning.
In addition, Pence supports so-called personhood bills that would criminalize abortion nationwide, and as Governor of Indiana he signed deplorable and draconian anti-abortion measures into law.
Perhaps one of the most dangerous and idiotic claims made by Pence concerns the use of condoms. In an interview with CNN, while advocating for abstinence only sex education, Pence said that condoms are too “modern,” too “liberal,” and offer a poor defense against sexually transmitted infections and diseases.
By disseminating false and misleading information about condoms, Pence demonstrates that he is willing to endanger the health and welfare of young people in order to promote his demented, right-wing, conservative Christian, puritanical agenda.
Bottom line: The war on women continues.
