Priest displays dead fetus on the alter in a twisted rant for Donald Trump.
The Rev. Frank Pavone placed an aborted fetus on the altar last Sunday to urge his congregation to vote for Donald Trump. The deplorable stunt was posted as a live video on Father Pavone’s Facebook page.
Pavone, a Catholic priest who heads the New York based anti-abortion group Priests for Life, said the fetus was entrusted to him by a pathologist for burial.
In the controversial Facebook post Father Pavone said:
Today I am showing you a child who was killed by abortion and entrusted to us by a pathologist for burial. I am showing him to you because in this election we have to decide if we will allow this child killing to continue in America or not. Hillary Clinton and the Democratic platform says yes, let the child-killing continue (and you pay for it); Donald Trump and the Republican platform says no, the child should be protected.
Many have condemned the controversial exploitation of the dead fetus, including fellow Catholics. In a blog post for Patheos, Scott Eric Alt argued that what Pavone did was sacrilege, a violation of Catholic Church canon law, which states that the altar is “reserved for divine worship alone, to the exclusion of any secular usage.”
Alt, writing for the Patheos Catholic Channel, declared:
Being pro-life is about respecting the dignity of the human person. It is the antithesis of respect for the dignity of the human person to use a dead child as a political prop to lobby for your presidential candidate the day before an election.
And in a blog post for the Archdiocese of New York, Ed Mechmann wrote about the “revulsion” he felt about the disturbing video:
A human being has been sacrificed and the altar of God has been desecrated, all for politics. Everyone who respects the dignity of every human person should reject and disavow this atrocity.
In another Facebook video posted Tuesday, Father Pavone tried to justify his deplorable actions in a confused and self-serving rant. However, the video only reinforces the notion that Father Pavone is a self-centered and childish man seeking to draw attention to himself by any means available, no matter how deplorable:
In the non-apology video, Father Pavone is clearly more upset about reporters not contacting him then he is about the fact that he exploited a naked and dead fetus in a vain and shameless act of self-promotion.
Yet despite Father Pavone’s attempt to justify the exploitation of the dead fetus, the fact that even fellow anti-abortion Catholics are condemning the despicable stunt illustrates the depravity of the priest’s actions.
Bottom line: Father Pavone’s actions are deplorable. Exploiting a dead fetus as a prop for a pro-Trump campaign video is outrageous and despicable no matter who you support for president, or how you feel about abortion.
