Attorney General Jeff Sessions is defending and supporting an anti-gay Christian hate group that wants LGBT people in prison.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions came to the defense of the conservative group Alliance Defending Freedom in a wide-ranging speech on religion Wednesday evening, taking direct aim at the Southern Poverty Law Center for labeling the conservative organization a “hate group.”
Sessions told the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), an SPLC designated hate group, that they are not a hate group.
Speaking at the ADF’s Summit on Religious Liberty, Sessions said:
We are not going to partner with hate groups. Not on my watch.
Sessions told the Christian hate group:
When I spoke to ADF last year, I learned that the Southern Poverty Law Center had classified ADF as a ‘hate group.’ They have used this designation as a weapon and they have wielded it against conservative organizations that refuse to accept their orthodoxy.
Yet the facts are undeniable. By supporting the ADF, Sessions is supporting a vicious, anti-gay Christian hate group.
That Christian “orthodoxy” Sessions speaks of is an agenda of hatred and bigotry.
LGBTQ Nation reports:
The ADF has repeatedly said that gay people are pedophiles, called homosexuality “evil,” and said that LGBTQ rights lead to the “sexual exploitation” of children. They want the government to criminalize homosexuality “to protect society at large” and they decry the “homosexual agenda,” a nefarious scheme to destroy Christianity.
Responding to Sessions and his support for the Christian hate group, the Southern Poverty Law Center notes:
The ADF richly deserves the hate group label. It supports the criminalization of sexual relations between consenting adults abroad. It opposes anti-bullying policies that provide protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. It says that the American Convention on Human Rights should not prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. It promotes the myth that there is a link between homosexuality and pedophilia despite the fact that the weight of scientific authority has debunked the claim.
Linking the LGBT community to pedophilia as the ADF has done is not an expression of a religious belief. It is simply a dangerous and ugly falsehood. FBI hate crime data show that the LGBT community is the minority group most likely to be targeted for violent hate crimes. Demonizing the LGBT community and portraying it as a danger to children is likely to exacerbate the hate crime epidemic it is facing.
Late last month Sessions announced the creation of a new “Religious Liberty Task Force.” The effect of the task force will be to promote conservative Christian values of hatred and bigotry like those espoused by the ADF, while punishing non-Christians and others who reject the hate.
The new Religious Liberty Task Force is a deplorable and unAmerican attempt to circumvent the separation of church and state and the secular values upon which this nation was founded, and a significant step on the current administration’s path towards a Christian theocracy.
Bottom line: Attorney General Jeff Sessions is defending and supporting an anti-gay Christian hate group that wants to place LGBT people in prison.
